I've been lurking on this forum for a while, and finally have some work to share.
Here are some renders of a competition entry for which we won Special Mention.
I used Grasshopper to model the ropes within Rhino. Let me know if anyone would like a look at the Grasshopper definition I created.
Each rope segment is an individual pipe. I needed to do that to achieve the overlapping look and shadows.
Used a dome light + HDRI. Uplights added only for night render.
Also, I was wondering if anyone could suggest a method of texturing the ropes with a typical rope pattern.
The problem is Grasshopper doesn't have a UVW mapping module to generate the correct mapping for each object, and there are way too many objects to do it manually.
Another issue I ran into - I was unable to get the anti-aliasing on distant ropes against a bright background to be smooth enough.
Any other feedback is welcome!
