  • CV90 Tank in Forest Clearing

    Hi all

Here's my latest project. This version is just a still (animation hopefully coming soon)
There's a slight DOF in the trees achieved in post with ZDepth. I also added some more vignetting in post and did some colour adjustments.
    BF, LC
    AA 1,8
VRaySun/Sky - set to "Overcast" mode
    Hope you like it...

    I like it!

Could maybe do with some very very slight soft bump on the panels and a variation map in the specular. I'd think about having some small shrubs at the base of the trees just so it isn't a direct transition from grass into tree, even if it's only making the grass higher just under the trees. A spot of flare / glow on those really hot spots on the tank and some light haze could give some lovely atmosphere too.

    Nice work sir!

The tank model was from a defence project I did a few years back. I originally modelled the tank in AutoCAD way back then
This one however is just a quick personal project for testing purposes. I'm testing some BF, DOF, MoBlur and animation settings. Also I recently upgraded my ForestLite to Pro and this was a good bench to test couple of things.

I want to try John's suggestions and will post an update as soon as I can get to it again.
        Kind Regards,

So for the glow bits here's some good theory with bad results: http://www.neilblevins.com/cg_educat...ular_bloom.htm
And then the same thing with some more good theory behind it: http://atomicfiction.com/2010/08/29/glow-madness/

So kind of what it's replicating is that air isn't 100% transparent, there's bits of haze and atmosphere in there and really hot light bouncing of a surface can hit these particles, also you get lens issues with glows and halos depending on your camera. Either way it's an added layer of depth.

On the haze front this is what I mean - http://www.peterguthrie.net/visualisation/farnsworth01/ which would suit the really sunny atmosphere you have. Here's a run down from the lovely Francesco Legrenzi of vray guide fame - http://vray.info/tutorials/vrayenvfogclouds/ and I reckon you're best off rendering it as a separate pass with a black override on everything and layering it on in post.

Did you just with a soft brush blur the bits?

Photoshop CS6 has a new lens filer, but you can do the same thing in CS5 with masking. In the past I used http://tiltshiftmaker.com/, but since my iPad has free apps, I have used it. it's basically blurring parts and saturating everything so it looks plastic.

OK so here's a quick update to this one:

EDIT: See page 2 of this THREAD for the update
                    or just click here: http://www.chaosgroup.com/forums/vbu...247#post574247

Added some tall grass and couple of bushes at treeline.
To the main tank shader, I added some bump, specular variation and for good measure added in a VRayDirt
Lens glare was done during render using VRay Lens Effects
Increased the vignette a little more in post with about 5 to 10%
I added a luminance mask, but that didn't turn out so nice so turned the opacity of that layer down to about 5%

EDIT: See page 2 of this THREAD for the update

                      Looking good sir.

Actually lets expand on it. I reckon definitely get in some atmosphere in there if even some depth fading - it should give the tank a bigger feeling of scale. I'd use a very large scale image to break up the colour of the ground and the grasses too - a bit more variation might give it a tiny bit more richness. Maybe the grass needs some translucency and spec too? No major things, I really like it and the changes you've made have made it really photographic.

                        Cool.

I'd maybe show a bit more sky and take the camera closer to the ground.. right now the top part of the image is quite dark and heavy. Also the treeline might benefit from an occasional bush to break the row of tree trunks. Just my 2 cents! I find this scene interesting as I'm also working on a couple of forest clearing kind of cases

                          Here's another update:
                          * some depth haze atmosphere
                          * variation layer to ligthen and color burn some areas of the ground and grass
