Standard bitmap file store the informations for each layers (red, green, blue) between 0 and 255. That means that white is equal to 255,255,255.
So, in a photo, the sun would appear as white, a lamp bulb also, a piece of white paper also... But their real intensity are differents.
What can you do with hdri ?
1) Use them to create true reflection
2) Use them to illuminate you scene
3) both 1) and 2)
How to 3)?
In 3dsmax, in the material panel assign in any map chanel a VrayHDRI then load your hdri and choose the right type (look for kitchen_probe.hdr on google and choose angular type), the in the environemment panel (8 key) grad and drop your VrayHDRI.
Then in the render panel, choose vray, check global illumination and that'all (for the first step create a metal sphere on a plane for instance)
This will allow you to use hdri files in max. Beyond that, can't really help you yet. (still trying to figure that out) but check out the help file that comes with plugin. Hope this helps.
