I'm bringing some model I'm working lately on to VRay. Principally I've began it as a material for my portfolio and rendered it initially with Yafaray. Model isn't finished as I lately spend more time on light setups and render tests than modeling itself.

http://dl.dropbox.com/u/828706/yataka/1002_vray_1.blend - here's the model with textures if anyone is interested. I modelled everything by myself. Textures are modified images from CGTextures and Arroway and I included them in blend here for educational purposes only.

I got some issues with handling repetitive textures via UV mapping. This is very WIP and I'm aware of too much bump here and empty scene. What I want to ask is can anyone give me some tips about setup, mainly about light setup for such project. I also want to ask about specular texture - I set it to max gloss and reflection and i still don't have mirror likeness (for testing purporses sake). I'd like to have more control over spec and don't know why it is so low.

How should I use light portals?

Project will be rendered from outside also.

Those are Yafaray renders to give you some idea.

Here are images I got till now from VRay (I really don't know what I'm doing most of the time )

Since I haven't found good thread about interior and exterior render setup with blend provided I hope that this thread might be of some benefit.

I like the same idea. How is this dropbox site for saving files? I would like to do the same. I will use the settings I've been using on my interior scene and post the resulting image here in this thread and you see what you think.

Here's an interior box. My CM/Env settings are on the left. There's 2 Omni lights in the scene, same setting for both and that's on the right. No fill or anything. Lights up the box pretty well.

I find I do need some fill, or postwork, with interior scenes lit from exterior sunlight. I made the windows small on purpose for those scenes. I didn't add any kind of light fixture to the ceiling lights and would have to experiment some to see what kind of impact they would make on the lighting.

Am looking through your file, especially at material settings. I am easily satisfied with the B/VRay lighting.
