Hi guys. Here are a few shots from my latest series showing existing architecture. After La Maison de Verre, I revisit Paris (not sure where this current fixation comes from) for an even more vintage building: the interior of the reading hall at the "Richelieu" branch of the French National Library (1862-186.

Modeled in 3ds Max and rendered in V-Ray 3. Post-pro in Photoshop.

One notable thing about this piece is that it makes very heavy use of Itoosoft's RailClone plugin for 3ds Max, which did a very good job of behaving predictably and flexibly. And the point-cloud viewport preview makes navigating the scene easy. I don't think I could have fit this scene in Max otherwise (not least because every book in the shelves is a high-poly model).

Some more shots from this series below.

You can find the entire two sets of images here and here. The second series is the same, just playing with some wet plate filters in Photoshop.

More info and viewport grab on my blog.

I love the material details, especially the foot marks on the floor! And the subtle things happening in the wood. Nice work

Bertrand - how do you do your glare effects? Is it with Vray Lens FX or just Photoshop post work?

Bobby: Many hours scattered over three months roughly. This was purely a spare time thing, trying to steal an hour here and there at evenings and weekends.

Bruce: the glare was done in post. I would normally use Photolooks, which has a nice dispersion filter. But I find that it has big gamma issues when working on 32-bit images that are larger than 2K, for some strange reason. So it was mainly done using the alpha, blurring it and screening it in different layers with curve adjustments and such.

Great stuff, Railclone is easily one of my most used & favorite plugins. So versatile.

Ah, was wondering about that, it's slightly less subtle than the usual. Amazing work nonetheless and this'd be a building to visit!
