that has forever been my problem with volumetric lights. in real life. if i had a dark dusty cave and shined a light across its opening. not into the cave. but across its opening and looked through the volumetric light into the cave. i wont be able to see details in the cave since the light isnt going in the cave. however in max. looking through volumetric lights brightens up whats behind the light.

Is possible to do that with Vray free?, i cant get those results.
I was rendering an image in layers, and i neede one volume light layer, but vol light doesnt works well with Vray shadows, so i tried "shadow map", but the results arent that good.
looks not so bad! i think the attenuation of the volumefog is too rapid - maby try to use a smoke in the mappingslot of the fog - wich kind of volume (max, scatter, finalrender) fog do you use and wich version of max, 4,5,6?
