Personaly I like the way the smoke dissapates as for the flame I was just playing around to see if I could capture the moments that the match first flares out. I'll work on a more correct flame tonight.
I'm afraid I can't comment on the workflow at this time
I think you need to find some high speed reference of the event you are trying to mimic and then work from there. Many times what we see is the result of actions that are too fast for eye to see as isolated events.
A match strike for instance changes quite a bit over the course of just a few frames of video at 30 fps. I would try to do the effect much slower and then time remap it in a compositing program up to the desired frame rate. The frame blurring the composting would add might more closely match the effect you are trying to achieve.
