  • Nestlé cereal ad

Here is a Nestlé cereal ad (first of 3) for which I did the sets and props shading, lighting and rendering with V-Ray 3! I was also in charge of all the VFX (except the small swirls around the cereal done at PSB). I hired Tommi Saaristoranta (TSR here on the forum) in Finland to do the fluid sims in PhoenixFD. I then did the shaders, lighting and rendering for them. I did the cocoa/snow effect with Krakatoa. All my work was done in 3DS Max and rendered in V-Ray. The characters modeling, animation, rendering and sets modeling were done by Pascal Blais Studio and their crew (Emile Ghorayeb did the character animation for them). Directed by Pascal Blais.

(the milk flowing in the cereal bowl at the end was just a reused from past work by someone else.)

Yes I will soon share more technical details in a tutorial/making of I hope to make.

For now I can say the first shot is just animated geometries for the streams with some pflow particles at the point of impact and both the geo and particles are merged together using Frost.

For the interior shots (2 and 3) I created a huge cave-like geometry with a very cool technique using Krakatoa and Frost to create a mesh from a procedural 3D texture. Tommi then simulated the fluid with PhoenixFD and I took care of tweaking the meshing (using only phoenixFD meshing), shading and rendering. I also used a vray distance shader to create some kind of textures on the cave walls to give the impression that the chocolate is kind of penetrating the walls and drying a bit (which was greatly improved in comp by Marc-André at Studio Pascal Blais (my client). I created 3 gradients texture fading in distance from a few snapshot of the phoenixFD geo and all those gradient were animated in comp to create the final effect. Volume lights were created in comp too in after effects. I rendered all the vray RAW passes in 16 bit EXR with linear workflow and the compositing with all the layers was done at 32 bits float sRGB linear in after effects.

Here is what the geo for the cereal interior looked like seen from outside:
