  • My first baby steps in V-Ray for Modo

    Hello all,
I´ve chosen Andy Browns sport shoe scene from the Modo content to see how V-Ray works.
There are some problems with the displacement (see attachment).
Is there some information out about how to use V-Ray for Modo? Some sort of a quick starting guide?
Is it proper to use the Modo materials or has V-Ray its own materials? Where can I find them? How can I apply them?

    Thanks,
    Holger
    (I´m using a Mac)

Sorry, wrong part of the forum, i should have used the problems section

Can you tell me how that scene is named and where to find it ? I don't find it in the "Samples" folder of the MODO content.
There is some information about displacement in V-Ray for MODO in this thread : http://forums.chaosgroup.com/showthr...t-render/page2
Generally we handle the displacement bounds a little differently compared to MODO, so that might be the reason for the difference in this render. But I need to take a look at the scene and check what exactly is going on.

V-Ray does have its own materials, and you can find them in the "Add Layer" menu of the "Shader Tree".
You can use MODO's materials with V-Ray, and I will try to improve support for that as much as possible,
but it is generally better to use the V-Ray material, as it doesn't allow you to do physically incorrect
materials like the MODO material does.
The V-Ray materials are applied the same way the MODO materials are applied. The 'm' shortcut though will
create a MODO material, which you will have to manually convert to a V-Ray material. We will add our own
command for applying a material tag and creating a V-Ray material under that tag in the shader tree.
    Hopefully soon.

As for docs, they are not written yet, but will be here eventually : http://docs.chaosgroup.com/display/V...MODO+Help+Home

You can use the V-Ray for 3dsMax or Maya docs as all the options for render settings/materials/textures are the same :
    http://docs.chaosgroup.com/display/V...r+3ds+Max+Help
    http://docs.chaosgroup.com/display/V...Maya+Help+Home

And if you are having a particular problem, just ask in this forum.

Thank you for the quick reply!
The filename is: Shorts_Shoe_Original.lxo (I guess there was a typing error, should be "Sports" instead of "Shorts")
      On my system it´s under : User▸ Library ▸ Application Support ▸ Luxology ▸ Content ▸ Samples ▸ Household
Would be cool to get the displacement working.

I can't find the scene and I downloaded the latest assets and samples for MODO for Mac OS X from The Foundry site.
Are you sure this scene comes with the samples, and is not something you have downloaded from somewhere else ?
Or maybe it was in an earlier version of the samples and then got removed ?

Maybe it´s old content wich wasn´t replaced with the last install. The file is from 2009.
I have send it to vladimir.nedev@chaosgroup.com.

So I took a look at the scene.
Problem areas 1 and 2 are most likely caused by V-Ray not multiplying the displacement values by the alpha channel of the displacement image.
I will have to fix this.

Problem area 3 is because the displacement there is using the MODO procedural noise texture and V-Ray for MODO doesn't support it.
The export process logs unsupported textures in the event log. You can replace it with a V-Ray noise texture instead.

Fully supporting MODO's procedural textures is not possible with the current MODO API. The best we can do is support some of the more
common procedural textures eventually, like MODO's noise texture.

Problem area number 1 will be fixed in the nightly build from 2015-04-03, as well as in the 3.00.06 open beta build.
V-Ray for MODO now uses the alpha channel of displacement textures when blending them, like MODO does.
This is true for the other scalar texture effects (bump, luminous intensity, etc...).
As a result of this, the "Reset" options for Horizontal/Vertical repeat of the texture locator also works with the scalar texture effects.

Here is how the V-Ray render looks after this change :

                Great News Vladimir!
                What is a nightly build?

Unfortunately I can not see the picture you have attached. The link seems to be dead.

We give nightly build access to fewer people, since they are not tested by QA. You also need a hardware dongle to license them.
I actually lied there, those fixes aren't in the nightly builds yet, I completely forgot I was working in a separate development branch.
In any case, the official open beta build will be uploaded to the site very soon, I will start a new thread in the General sub-forum, when it is.

I know that's an old thread, but still, V-ray doesn't support modo procedural textures? I could notice V-ray not even get close to the modo's arsenal.

What V-ray can't achieve yet? I'm using modo since 201 so it would be frustrating trying to achieve something which V-ray can't deliver. I'd like a smooth transition, that's why I'm searching before.

We have our own procedural textures.
We still do support some of the Modo texture layers, you can check which ones here : https://docs.chaosgroup.com/display/...+Compatibility
