Chinese Pavilion - Milan Expo 2015

Hiya, Folks.

After 5 months I've finally been given clearance to show a couple out of the series of images I did for the Chinese Pavilion for the Milano 2015 Expo.

Not a huge amount to say other than the wheat fields are intended to look somewhat unnatural and the skin was tricky to do. I had to unwrap each panel which was done with a plugin (can't remember what it's called :P) and textools. Then each panel was created with 4 faces. 2 to extrude out in each direction, and two to cap the insides plus the frame in between.

nice. What is it supposed to be made of? bamboo and glue-lams? Is that wheat on the sides symbolic of anything?

Yes the exterior panels are metal frames with bamboo strips criss-crossing it either side. As I remember the two profiles from which the structure is lofted between, represent the city and the clouds with the agricultural aspect below. The structure appears to float (like a cloud) above the wheat field... or so I was told. :P

Just great renders and interesting architecture. Really like the contrast between the wheat fields and the dark backdrop. Could've been way overdramatic like we often see it on photos, but you did it just right. Any chance to see the buildings from a closer perspective?
Wish I had more modeling chalenges like this...

Franx: unfortunately the second shot is as close as we got. I did some other views but I wasn't super happy with them so I'll leave them for the archives :P It was quite a challenge indeed (hand placing all the support rods for the second shot attached wasn't a particularly fun part of the challenge) and time was pretty unaccommodating...
