  • dbox - jade signature

Our London office recently finished these images for jade signature, a new residential building designed by herzog & de meurom here in Miami.
I didn't work on these - I just think they're beautiful and as they've gone public I wanted to share with everyone here.
There was a full ad campaign of 15 images total, each produced around 9-10k for large format printing.

      Fantastic!

Because these are so good and because I am a dick I am going to point out a couple of little things that jumped out at me, but they all boil down to the same comment - this building is clearly haunted.

      - The shadow on the planter on the right of this image http://i.imgur.com/JNpLn5h.jpg appears to go straight through it. Almost as though it's trapped between worlds, like a spirit.
      - The distortion on the right of the last image seems a little extreme compared to everything else, almost as though the chair and stool/table are sliding off. Perhaps being pulled by a ghost?
      - Most importantly, most damningly - the pattern on this rug http://i.imgur.com/Gf4OvMM.jpg is almost *exactly* the same as the carpet in The Shining http://38.media.tumblr.com/tumblr_ll3aipRs061qi4nyc.png

Aside from those spooky points, incredible work.

We have had SO much trouble with spectral infestations recently, i am so sorry. I hate to be the one who has to say this but you should probably check your pipes for a spooky ghost, they spread like you wouldn't believe.

(well caught - first one plants were added later, second the extension to the right was an overscan added last minute and the shining is just a great movie)

Well I've heard that following on from UV-Ray, chaos is working on the next generation of renderer; code-name 'hex-Ray' which should support scene excorcisms.

Just wondering after seeing it on these images (and plenty of others) are you guys still faking caustics or are you all computing them? I can never seem to achieve any decent caustics by calculating them aside from in uber close up shots.

Great images from DBox as always.

We very rarely do real caustics, only ever done it for lighting fixtures and it's always been done as a separate pass (see post 6 here http://forums.chaosgroup.com/showthr...hlight=madison )
pools are a little too unwieldy to do properly, we try like once a year then say 'fuck it, maybe next year'.

Thanks for the info, I am exactly the same. Every time I think "this could look sweet with caustics", I spend a few hours messing around with settings and then give up.

Yes caustics are really lacking to Vray ATM, at least easy caustics, that are build into the render stage directly, something that can be refined as all the rest in vray with just the noise threshold.
Having to pre-compute them and blow the ram out and have special rigs for it etc is just not practical enough in production.
it's something we are really looking forward to see implemented for years though, just hoping chaos will get on to it at some stage...

We still probably wont use them for pools - the effect we have in that image is exactly what the client wanted to see, but trying to make the geometry and light it to accurately recreate that same effect is going to take much longer.
For other things i'm all for it tho.

                          Great images!

What did you use for bump/displacement-map for the water surface in the exterior pool? Ive seen lots of images lately with really nice water in them. In the past ive just used a couple of noisemaps but it always looks too uniform. Do you use plugins like phoenix or is it just a good bitmap?
