  • Cadbury CRAVE

    Hello!

Finally got permission to show a project I worked on at the beginning of the year. More chocolate work but this time for Cadbury Canada.

Final artwork was close to 30'000 pixels wide so here are some gratuitous close up crops.

Hopefully the concept is pretty clear but basically, each letter referenced a specific chocolate bar, so had to be made of those ingredients. My colleague Matt worked up the wrappers, seen here

Technical stuff - modelling of the letters started in 3ds max but 90% of the detail and texture was sculpted in Zbrush. V-Ray proxies were a god send as some of the letters ended up being 4-5 million polys each. Some of the ingredients, specifically around the A, were photographed as it was much faster and, as always, timings were really tight.

The honeycomb texture was the hardest to replicate and I still don't think I'm quite there yet. I ended up making a load of honeycomb, photographing it then creating a crude displacement map from those images.

I also did another word (REGAL) for the French territories but it's pretty much the same as this one.

    Cheers!

For detail you're an absolute monster AJ - whatever about the product it's for but your craft is seriously impressive.

Man this looks tasty. Love the overall not quite photoreal/cartoonish look. (I hope thats what you were going for)
The yellowish layer undeath the chocolate on the R looks a bit weird to me but maybe just because I don't know the original product. But still awesome work as always AJ.

I know exactly what you mean. The bar is a compressed peanut butter with a hard yellow candy coating. I don't think the material I have does the real product justice to be honest.

Haha this just makes me smile, so much detail. Impressive. How long did it take you? And also how did you do the chocolate. Was it handmodeled or did you use particles?

Thanks! I had just over 2 weeks to do this version and the other word 'REGAL'. All of the liquid and chocolate was modelled/sculpted. I'd love to have gotten into simulations but I think I would have needed an extra couple of months just to get my head around that! Not to mention it's a LOT easier to art direct myself vs a simulation

To get the kind of behavior for this shot with simulations you'd have needed some serious scripting plus alot of patience and a therapist available 24/7 for the frequent rage outbursts :P
