  • Who you gonna call?

Now that Halloween has passed, I can show a couple of things I've been working on. First up is this guy!

This is a beauty render (for want of a better word), the project was actually to create a 20 second animated clip of Slimer gobbling some food and eventually getting caught by the Ghostbusters to help promote Jameson's Cult Cinema Club in Dublin.

I'm going to post some more details (as well as the animation) later, I just need to check some things with the client first.

My first tests with him had a much shinier/slimier finish but it never looked quite right. I think you're right, I should have gone slightly more glossy that this though.

The event this was for has now been and gone, so I thought I'd post a little more info. The animation of Slimer was projected on a 'holographic' screen at the event and as part of a promotional stunt. The screen is one of these - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Trdr-EX8I2c

Here's the animation (I've comped him over a background to give it a little more context)

It's not perhaps the greatest animation you're ever going to see and I am very aware of that! The original plan was for me to model and texture him then pass it on to a very talented animator friend of mine to rig and animate. Unfortunately the original timescale for the project got dramatically shortened, which I'm very used to but it meant that the 4 or so weeks the animator needed to rig/animate were now about 10 days, so he had to pass on it, leaving me to rig and animate and render him in a crazy short amount of time.

There were a few technical restrictions also, the screens can display a maximum of 20 seconds of video and I had a number of 'beats' the client wanted in that time frame (spinning, eating startled, curious, angry, proton struggle and trap) and still have it all read clearly.

Anyway, I'm still waiting to get more footage of him running on the screen at the event..etc. but here's some stuff that's been put on social media:

As you can probably see, one of the side effects of the spinning screen is that there is a pronounced flicker and rolling shutter effect. Apparently this isn't evident at all when seen with the naked eye but unfortunately I've yet to see it 'in the flesh' (no pun intended).
