Yes, lighting is hdr images + ies lights. Grass is replicated geometry - I used assets from Real Grass bundle by Vizpark.

I have much more experiance with V-Ray than with modo native render but V-Ray at this point needs much less tweaking to get clean results, renders faster complex scenes (again without much tweaking) and always gets complex scenes rendered. In my opinion it is just more realiable.
