I actually prefer your new render. It seems to have richer colour to it.
I guess it depends on what you're tyring to reproduce. If you're after
an image which looks like the scene was set up for a professional photographer, then I'd say the new method looks better.
If you're just trying to match what a room would look like without all the lighting gear that professional crews carry around to illuminate a room then I'd go for your old system.
Either way, you're still a legend.
