  • Need Critique/Suggestions for 737 WIP

I'm primarily an on set director of photography but I'm trying my best here as a lone wolf vfx generalist. I'm fairly happy with how my airplane asset has developed but I figured it might be worthwhile to get some professional opinions.

Please critique my plane asset. I'm open for suggestions and advice for anything from modeling, texturing, even render settings. You might notice I have some specks here and there. I got rid of some by upping my min subdivs amongst other things, but some still remain.

Also, I've animated the landing gear, but as you might notice when it's up it pops through the wing. Besides creating a more complex rig for it, I've been trying to find a way to hide the geometry via something similar to a slice plane modifier (without having to animate the gizmo).

This model will be used for a theatrical feature film in the US, and I'm rendering shots in 1080p. (This 360 video however was rendered in 2400 wide beauty pass only and down scaled to 1080p. There is a film LUT applied as well.)

Building models like this can be a good learning experience but if this for a theatrical film you would be better off purchasing a model from TurboSquid.

The base model of the plane is from turbosquid. It was pretty basic so I had to do a good deal of remodeling to it.

In that case I would throw more money at a higher quality model.... I don't know what your hourly rate is but take the price of one of these models and divide but the number of hours you have spent detailing the model you have. Is it lower than your hourly rate? Will it be lower than your hourly rate when you are finished? If the answer to either of these is yes then it has cost you more money than it has saved.

It's funny you link to those because those were what I priced out for when I took the gig. When I went to make the purchase the producers got nervous about rights clearances for Boeing products and forced me to go for a lower quality generic. At this point it's too late for me to restart the plane anyway. The feature is a small step above a B movie so with the limited budget and time my goal is to achieve vfx at least above quality of asylum movies (sharknado for example).
