This is a large in fill hotel project. I started with a sketchup model made by the architects. That presented some significant challenges. Select by material and get parts of this and parts of that and all over the place. Lots of extra geometry that would never be seen. lots of missing or wonky geometry that would be seen. Its for presentations in a multi step design review board and town council approval process.

My first time using forest pack. what a cool program that is! plus I kicked down some pretty big $ to add 3D plants and etc into my library to better match the landscape architects specific plant layout and schedule. There are a lot of existing sandstone landscape boulders at the site and there are a bunch more specified to be added. the vizpark real boulders matched up just right. lucky to have known about them and well worth the price for this one job.

I have just sent these out to the various people involved and I'm waiting to hear back. I'm interested in any comments or critique.

I am working on 3rd view and there may also be a fourth.

Very nice! The first one has a miniature feeling, but I can't tell you why. Second was is good, too.

very nice, it seems though like most of the materials have no reflection or glossy values, abit flat

thank you both for your comments!

MitviZ - you have a very good eye! most of the materials do not use any reflection amount. I have gone around with this and welcome any advice or other point of view.

        1) I have been given some sample and color values and swatches etc. After matching those the appearance changes if I add reflection. Clients then say, "not right color". Same issue if adding color to sunlight or changing white balance

        2) when I add a little bit of reflection to brick pavers, stucco, wood and use fresnel reflections, that seems to = minimal visual impact and noticeable render time increase. doesn't seem worth it.

I am hearing you and welcome any insight regarding this. Thanks!

Overall look nice and clean, lighting is a bit flat to me here.

The planting is really good but as said, you need to start playing with the reflection of the materials.

I did some revisions. Added some more people and some other things. I put some blurry fresnel reflection into all of the materials per comments above. there is a 3rd view in process but it's not a very compelling angle. 4th view may also be done.

Thank you all for your helpful comments.

hmm the plants to the right look photoshoped and has different light intensity, i think you need to bump up the lights, in real life the sun is really hot and burns alot of places, also maybe get some luts, i added a few here so you can see some changes i madeClick image for larger version

                  Hi,

Thats really helpful and thank you. The plants on the right (with the children sculpture) are part of the site photograph. so Photoshoped in I guess. More the rendering is composited with the photo. It ties it to the actual site for the review board and client and others.

Regardless I see what you mean. I rendered these as .exr so I think I will turn up the exposure of the rendering. Thanks for that good observation.

                  What are luts?

I did another round of updates. This has been pretty challenging on a few fronts. The architects will only supply a sketchup model they created. They use it to generate the elevations. It is an insane mashup of stuff that has been very difficult to work with. It serves their purpose but is not so good for mine. This is all preliminary and going for initial P &Z approval and direction so I understand they are reluctant to put much into it at this stage.

Landscaping and relationship to pedestrian areas is very important to this. My first time using Forest Pack. Could not have done this without. Due to all of the 3D plants, unnecessarily complex sketchup model and etc it is bringing my system to it's knees. I'm overdue for a computer upgrade and now... more so than ever. Starting to research what I should invest in. Currently Win 7, Core2 Quad 2.40, 8 Gig Ram, GeForce 8800 GTX

I have 1 ss drive with OS and apps. Another drive D:/ with all my project data/files/assets user created stuff. Another drive E:/ with a localhost server setup for website stuff. Right at the last part of working on this and two other projects, all with very hard and tight deadlines, suddenly, can't write to D:/. yikes, Double Yikes and panic attack. Trouble shooting and etc causes windows to go into a weird and never before seen by me self repair mode. Windows comes back to life. I move all data to E:/ and change it's assigned letter to D:/ and abandon old D:/. sheeesh x 10. Lost sleep and upset GF.

That is my tale for your enjoyment. Comments and critique are solicited. That's why I post these.

I upped the exposure of 1 and 2 per MitViz suggestion. I think it helped. Some other refinements. #3 shows a partial section of the new design thinking. Moving left of the flag pole the building does not show the same design as the section to the left of the flag pole. That's how they want to show it to the review board for now. "here's where we were, here's what we're thinking now." Not the most compelling view angle but very difficult to get anything better given the realities of the site and the purposes that this is to serve (not for marketing).

This project came back for extensive revisions. It is pretty much the same building but all of the fenestration and materials are changed, floor heights modified, roof changed, etc. It was just submitted for it's second step of a 3 step approval process. The other difference is the camera3 view. I was asked to include the future street improvements that the municipality is contemplating. Traffic calming, more pedestrian and bike friendly via lane narrowing with plantings and etc.

                      Here are the revised renderings:

Looking a LOT better compared to those 1st ones, but agree with Shawn, still needs "something"
For example flip the sky in the 1st image, sun is coming from the other side etc

Thank you for your review and suggestions. I am not so keen on these but I will say the architects and developer are very happy with them. It's an in fill project, not very compelling design, funny site conditions, difficult location to photograph from advantageous view point. The renderings are specifically to show the project in it's actual context and to present to the Planning and Zoning board and then Town Council for approval. They have now made it thru P and Z and according to the developer/client the renderings were critical in moving the protect forward. I may get an opputunity to tweak further for the Town Council presentation.

So, not very compelling as stand alone renderings but apparently effective for communicating what was needed for
                            P&Z.

                            Thanks again for your commments!

Good work, but for me the lighting and materials are what need the most love.

I know how it is to have clients that ONLY want their building shown in direct sunlight, but sometimes you just have to put a sexy dusk/sunset image in front of them to make them change their minds.
