  • Character animation

    Hi,

this is a first character animation weve done entirely using Vray RT GPU.
We had to overcome a few obstacles when lighting this and its not completely "right" but the client was happy and so were we because it rendered very fast ))

Looking forward to Vray RT GPU improvements !!!
    Regards

      Looking really good, Martin!
Can you give us a bit more details on the struggles you faced with this one? I saw your post on the FB GPU group and you mentioned the directional light issue. Can you elaborate on that?
      Cheers!

Could you also post a link to this please?
I don't use flash anymore and therefore the embedded player doesnt work
        Kind Regards,

          Does this work Morne???

it should not be flash...i also have it posted on the vray RT GPU facebook page....shoudl be watchable there.

As for the lights, i have found out (after 3 days of mindbending) why the CPU and GPU result looks so different...that GPU doesnt support the directional lights )))
Therefore i had to completely ditch the preparations in classic vray and turn to RT GPU and start from scratch there....worked great once i got used to workign with its limitations.
I the end i have used custom made HDRI lighting which i created in HDRI Light Studio + some additinal vray plane lights and i had to play there a alot with the distance and intensity to get what i really wanted to achieve.
The lighting doesnt completely real or how it woudl work in the real world, but it worked for the majority of the animation so we kept it the way it looked.

The worst obstacle was a skinning glitch that MAX seems to have when rendering either in BB mode or in DR mode ....some frames the parts of the character were completely out of place on 1 or two machines...i havent discovered yet what is causing this but will keep looking

The rendertimes were varying between 2-6 minutes per frame (full HD) using RT DR utilizing 2 graphic cards.

Looking forward to the next project to have more possibilities now that directional lighting works in the nightlies! Thanks Chaos team !!!

nice work, what rigging sysytem are you using for this one?
              Best regards,

Great! Frames look nice a clean too.

Did you have any problems with motion blur? I've only just started dipping my toe into using RT GPU for animations and I've had a couple of incidents where some frames appear to render the motion blur incorrectly.

                  Jackie:
Not sure what you mean when you say system but we generally make every rig custom, do loads of morph targets and tweak the weights a lot when skinning. SOmetimes we find out somethisng doesnt work well so we have to go back and start from scratch ....the only very systematic part is proper naming of all animation properties.

                  AJ:
I havent done proper testing and comparisons but the problem we had with some buckets or frames rendering without motion blur and with subobjects being misplaced could hint there is something strane going on under the hood. On the second thought i had a few places in this animation where i thought the plant pots were not rendering properly in motion blur but the deadline was so tight that i could not go into the debuging and just take what it rendered....in the end no one woudl notice anything. There are] still a few places where we have jntersecting objects and some errors but that escapes the viewers eye thankfully

Thanks guys btw glad you like it!

Is the video gone or is it just my browser being moody on the ipad?
