Black is ALWAYS hard to deal with, especially when it comes to sampling & GI.
You can use a material override for the GI [with a brighter material] to get a little bit more light bouncing around.
I tend to give a little bit more reflection to blacks so that they are a touch brighter.

You can also achieve things a lot easier in post-production when it comes to 'blacks' so don't try & get it perfect in the render. It's better to have it slightly brighter than you want as the sampling in Vray will be better/faster, then adjust the blacks in post

      Hope this helps

can you highlight which ones? as there are close to 40 plant species outside

                little night test.
One of the outside ies light fixtures is producing some weird shade artefacts...have to look into it.
I ve done this to test the speed and i have to say i was not pleasantly surprised :-/// slow and noisy
Of course i will have to play with the light intensities and colors a lot when it comes to the evening renders late on

The adaptive lights in 3.5 should help for this type of scene; if you continue having issues with it, it would be good to take a look at it.

                  Best regards,
                  Vlado

Oh are they all from different places then? I assumed they might all be part of a pack of plants used.

yes, some of them are custom made, some from turbosquid, some from evermotion and some from maxtree. Most of them have beed tweaked a little to better support the lighting.

                      Macker:
the grases around the pool are evermotion with tweaked texture.
ferns, and the undergrowth are maxtree.
fence is custom made and scattered through forest pack.
If you struggle to find some of them, PM me and will send you exact plant package names.

                      Vlado:
I just cant wait to give a 3.5 a ride Vlado...just waiting for a stable release or more stable beta so i can spread it all accross the office.
Were under some deadlines so i have to be patient i guess.
I have high hopes for adaptive lights and also high hopes for the improved bump mapping and glossy fresnel. If i still struggle within 3.5 i will be happy to consult this with you thanks!

a little sample of an addition i ve made yesterday.
I will yet be addgin some more variation to the texture and perhaps make some bits in the model stand out a wee more.

                          Looking good.

Is this a personal work, or commercial?

                            thanks, well...its something in between.
It started as a commercial project but its ending up as a project where i pul lots of effort to make it my signature project as well as project where we will present scanned interior assets for sale.
Its still in a very very WIP stage and i am waiting on architecs directions hence the slowness of updates.
So in the meantime i am playing with ligting variation and material setups as well as with techniques that i havent done before, such as this carpet which incorporated marvelous designer, skinning and morph targets.
                            Having fun with this

I think that is EV parameter in Physical Camera (from 3dsmax 2016-17)
