Just an idea: maybe if you could colorize a bit the shadows, I think a slightly colorfull env color would do it. It would look more friendly.

You are wasting a lot of polys (polies)!!...this polygon redundancy use to be necessary when working with Lightscape because of the way it needed to break faces up into small subdivs, however, it's seems very inefficient when using any of the latest GI renderers.
Although the light wood messes it up, wrong scale and not really classy compared to the other wood that you used. Maybe you should use a straight grain oak veneer instead.
