Here is something I worked on last week. Its in the schematic design phase....Modeled and textured in a 40 hours. Of course this would include several changes by the designer in the office.

I can critic the hell out of it.......Just a WIP.

    Anyone else care to comment.

    hi Arkitec..

    Where to start..
    • All your images are lacking detail needed to produce quality renders.
    • A good tip is to Chamfer all your hard edge's, this will make a big difference.
    • Your lights are very haphazard and are blowing out in lots of place's.
    • The Barcaloner chairs are so low poly it painfull .. and the legs are bent flat which they arnt in real life, and the material is like PVC..
    • Everything has a yellowy Beige sort of hue to it ... to much colour bleed going on.
    • I know we all have to use them from time to time but the RPC'S are real bad, you have a mix of suited poeple with old people .. and they dont match the images at all.
    • Your GI is very low and you have lots of artifacts... need to crank those setting a lot ..
    • Im not sure but in the dinning room, the table nearest to us .. the plant is leaving a cross mark on the table cloth? and the light could do with a boost in there.
    • nearly everything looks very block'y and out of scale slightly.
    • In the fourth image you seem to have no glass in the door's and windows, and looking closely, you have a plant / tree coming in ..

Sorry to be harsh .. just what i see..

    regards

      Hey Natty...Thanks for commenting.

I agree, all image are set to preset very low as they are WIP for schematic design.

The lights really arent haphazardly placed, they are ALL located in the designed space which really doesnt show up well. The 4th image is the worst in my opinion.....Ive used IES lights at all fixtures plus a general Vray light for each shot, as well I have a targeted sun.

I downloaded the Barcelona chair from Evermotion on the free stuff section....as for the detail, I totally agree.

The yellowy beige color was intentionally as they are to represent a feel the designer for the project wants.....so actually, im glad you noticed it.

Again, GI was low, to spit out the renderers.

The plant is leaving a cross mark, as you can see I have a diffuse and refraction setup with a alpha, how do you get rid of the cross marks other than photoshop? and I totally agree about bumping up the lighting in the dining area.

I agree with the RPC's but until there is a better solution, im stuck with them...I did try and manipulate the brightness and contrast in pshop...obviously without success.

There is a piece of geometry for the glass, not sure why its not picked up, the material is the same as in image one, which does show the environmental reflection......The lighting is terrible in the 4th.

      Thanks for the comments......

I can only try and improve!

                    Hi,

I like the last image quite a lot in particular the panel on the wall with lighting behind.

Im not expert in Vray so cant offer too much in terms of opinion yet but IMHO thats a good effort for 40 hours work!

We have the same problems with clients and deadlines. They dont realise that more freedom and time = better results. Sometimes you have to fight for it and make them wait

Ive had problems with IES lights as well so another option is to go for standard lights and use direct computation for second bounces. Im having a lot more success since ditching photon mapping. I dont know if you are using photonmapping for second bounces but with IES lights I couldnt get it to work properly.

Id try cranking Hsubs up a lot (try 100 with interp 20) using irradiance + low settings for direct (1/3 works for me)

For the RPC's, I wouldnt put any closer than 50% into the depth of your scenes and also thin out the plants through the door. Some grass or paving would be nicer with some real glass reflecting some of the rest of the room. Id still stick to the RPC's though because what are the other options? using 3D models...ow!

I would definatly invest in a few high quality bits of furniture (buy 1-2 per project) as i have also failed miserably with trying to make do with low quality free downloads. If you dont have time to build furniture, try hiring someone on contract to build them (try poor uni students :P)

I dont know if these thoughts help you or not but anyway, good effort, keep up the good work!

                      hey...
                      sorry HAIR cut...
ok Natty you have a nice hair cut, everybody knows it
nice try by the way to change your avatar...but i don't like the last one...put something more personal...your photo for example
no... my "nice hair cut" was more ironic... i was talking about the two old rpc ladies...
i am really a fan of rpc, and that is also ironic

I think my big problem with RPCs is that their shadows never match up with the lighting. If there's some way you can insert diff people or reposition them. I guess another thing which can be done is a little photoshoping on them if your scenes are not animated.
