  • 2 Story House - need tips

    Hi everyone,

This is my first go at using displacement and some materials as ive only really rendered stuff in vray properly in white so far.. I know its average but im looking for tips!

My window frames are supposed to be anidised aluminium but i just cant get it looking metallic!. Im kind of happy with the grass, water and paving but my white render has a lot of blue in it, no doubt due to the environment map (multiplier 1.5). There is just one directional light with vray shadows. Overall everything looks a bit too blue do you guys think? My light source is off-white yellow so there should be more yellow in there.

One thing I want to do is render out as EPIX to put plants on afterwards but for some reason, rendering with vray in viz2005 using the latest epix plugin causes viz to exit when the render is finished and itrying to save the epix. Has anyone been using piranesi with vray??

oh one problem i have is the displacement seems to raise the paving up about 30mm from the original level. do i make the water level -30mm to compensate for this? (see image)

Anyway here is my preliminary image, any tips at all are welcome! thanks in advance

is it seriously that bad? no replies... damn!

I tried to do more work on this but started getting large blue dots near the lawn at the front and have no idea why...this was after i recalculated the GI from scratch

Hello paulison, a friend told me a tip about that errors of big colored dots in the render. in the depth slot of secondary bounces take it very low value 1 if necessary... i don't know if this is the optimal solution, but it work for me

About your render, you need to expend more time with materials and mapping i think.

thanks, ill try that out next. This image below I rendered out at 640x480 and you can clearly see the problem. The IR map calculates perfectly in 1.09 but in 1.45.7 i get the blotches. Would it be a modelling problem? this one done in archicad by a housing company in australia

everyting is vray or standard materials with egz glass. Should I try a differnt glass?

ive unticked check max context and visibility distance but no good

show a screenshot of all your irradiance map settings.

Thanks for the reply Percydaman. I bet there is something simple ive missed thats so obvious...if its not on this image, what else could cause this?

i have 3 secondary bounces and 50 subdivisions for QMC. Trying lowering subdivisions at the moment

It's because you have "show samples" checked. Uncheck that box. Those round dots you see are the points of light that VRay calculates, when "show samples" is checked, VRay displays those points. It's a useful feature for checking sample distribution, but it's not supposed to be on during normal rendering.

haha I decided to assume he KNEW he had that setting checked.

ok when I untick that, the little sample dots go but I go back to my original problem which was blue dots and weirdness. Ill post another image soon if I cant figure this out

Yeah, post a picture of the blue dots. The more information you give us, the more we can help you.

Ive done a material override render just in white and there is no blue splotches so Its definatly one of my materials. Ill try changing one at a time.

Im thinking its either the water, glass or aluminium frames. All are vray materials though....

Maybe caustics are enabled and causing it?

Try makin lower the depth of your secondary bounces, this work if you are using irradiance map instead of photons for secondary.

ive rendered without caustics and also tried making secondary GI bounces 1 with 20 subdivisions and it still happens. Kind of a weird problem eh!!

Could it be displacement mapping? I set all of the displacements in 1.09 but have switched to 1.47.5 shortly after. Ive only had these problems since making the switch. Obviously theres a few things I havnt figured out yet
