    does anyone know what causes these dots to show up? - or can you point me to a previous post that addresses this? thanks.

      theres been several threads about it, one really long....and somewhere in there you'll find the link to a tutorial made by "metin" ( i think ), where he describes mostly all Vray splotches causes.

      Do a search of the word "splotches" and you'll find it.

        I was looking at the old 'definitive splotches' thread, but at the time the pictures were not loading.

          Based on my experience, it is usually the metal materials that do this... ones with reflections or bright specular highlights.

          The two biggest culprits are raytraced materials, and specular highlights.

          When using VRay, always make sure to use the VRMap for all reflections. Not only is it a lot faster within VRay, it is also less bug prone.

          Secondly, take a look at your materials and see if any have a specular level higher than 99. If so, take it down below 99 and see if it alleviates the problem. This always does the trick for me.
