  • Old model, new Vray render....

    Hey boys n girls!

This is an old model I decided to re-render with Vray for my portfolio.

Not too interested in changing the design... but I would love to get some crits and comments on materials, lighting etc, and pointers for making it better/more real...
Its definately the photo-real look Im going for, but I havent used Vray for long and I dont think Im there yet.... so, any help greatly appreciated!

its lit with 3 Vray lights (windows) + a direct sun (but I gave the sun too low multiplier so you cant really tell its there... ill try to fix this in an update soon)
Ill post my settings as soon as I can too.

rendertime was 1 hour, 15 min. res: 700x600 including GI calc.
Irrmap and lightmap used for GI.

gave it a little more contrast in PS, and also added a sharpen filter... I like the crispiness it gives the pic, but at places it looks more like really crappy AA, so is there a better way to make it crisp? Is there any kind of plugin or something that gives you a crispier AA than catmull rom for example?

    thanks in advance people!!

the wall tiling in between the upper and lower cabinets in the direct center of the image looks like there's some artifacts, but ye might get away with touching those up in photoshop.

        The lighting looks very good.

Fix the AA problem mentioned before and this is a first rate render.

Excellent job. Great textures, love the floor. I just can't seem to get past the thought that the counter with the apples and the chair seem to float a little.

            Very nice lighting indeed.

Could turn ON the light over the table?

If you want to get an even sharper image than what you get with the Catmull-Rom filter, use Mitchell-Netravali filter and set the Ringing to something like 0.8 and above. Sharpening the image as a post-process will always degrade the AA.

Keep in mind that if you have some fine regular details, sharpening filters may lead to increased moire effects. Sharpening filters may also make the noise in glossy reflections and/or area lights/shadows more visible.

              Best regards,
              Vlado

                thank you all!

tutanmark - nope, wont do that in this pic. I kinda like that its only lit with exterior light... thanks anyway.

ravexl - ok.. so how could I fix this? is it possible with lightmap GI, or should I switch to IRR map for second bounce too?

ridestowe - this is partly because of the PS sharpen filter I added... But I think I also should increase the subdivs on the glossy refl.

Vlado - thanks for the info! Ill try the mitchell-netravali AA as soon as I get a chance.
