  • The Alps

I was playing around with SRTM and SID Data.. and these are some results !

the same picture in a high resolution !

    http://sorceress.netfrag.org/optix/S...ps_highres.jpg

And last but not least a flythrough.

We start a little west of munich... flying towards the Alps. The big lake
is Lake Starnberg.. my home... Than we go further and pass Lake Kochel
and Lake Walchen at the beginning of the Alps.
We continue our flight through the so called Karwendel Mountains following
the street while passing "Mittenwald" and "Seefeld".Finally we make a swing by at the infamous "Zierler Berg" and slow down at Innsbruck Austria.

This was made for a still.. so the camera motion was just set in some minutes for testing this .. expect some spikes
    Also no was Gi calculated

        that's a "düsenjet"

          Hi there,

          @neromare

          http://www.chaoticdimension.com/foru...pic.php?t=8788
the url of the SRTM ftp changed the last days
          ftp://e0dps01u.ecs.nasa.gov/srtm/
and its hard to get a connection.. so be patient !
The SID Data can be obtained from
          https://zulu.ssc.nasa.gov/mrsid/mrsid.pl
(download option didn´t work with mozilla.. use IE)
once downloaded you need this plugin to view SID´s
          in your browser
          http://www.lizardtech.com/download/

          @oconv
it´s much faster than a "düsenjäger" I often fly this
route in flightsim with a hornet and it takes between 10 and 15min
so must be some sort of scramjet !

The texturing was quite hard. I downloaded a sid file from the url above.
That are files with a dimension of 50000x40000px.. far beyond
anything photoshop, fusion or max can open. So i had to use this little
commandline tool to crop out a jpg with a dimension of 10000x10000
          http://www.lizardtech.com/download/d...php?page=tools
This was used for rendering. I used a much smaller version of this file
to match the textures to the mountains.

I´m currently looking for a better way to assign textures..

          cheers

Great animation, though the camera moves did make me a bit queazy. At the beginning there appears to be some fog in the background. How did you get that effect?

                  Thanks for comments

@zapcat: this is a max standard fog but the anim was a bit brightened
in depth by the z-buffer. That produces it a bit more natural look

ah yes.. and if i find some time I will make a bit slower and smoother animation.. maybe next time himalaya
