Something a little different than usual!
A friend of mine has been working on a surreal Youtube series, stringing together a load of 'found footage' clips for a dark set of comedy sketches (you can see the first of the series here https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=woOkBo_26lA).
I've been helping out here and there with some (intentionally!) awful CGI animations, however the plan was to have the series culminates in a 20 minute sci-fi short film which ties all of the nonsense together, and Paul asked me if I could do a single VFX shot for it. Not having any actual VFX experience, I agreed but let him know that I would only be able to do that one shot and it probably wouldn't be any good. Anyway, jump to 6 weeks later and I had somehow worked on around 16 shots, including a matte painting, match moving, adding muzzle flashes/smoke and a number of fully CGI sequences.
I don't think there's anything technical in it that would be exciting to most on here. I modelled a lot of the damage to the building in ZBrush and used Substance Painter for the first time which helped texture things insanely quickly. For the final vortex opening sequence, I used Phoenix FD, which I'm not too experienced with but was really happy with the results.
I'm going to work up some breakdowns of some of the various shots over the next week but in the meantime, please enjoy this incredibly low budget sci-fi, bum-based bonanza!
