  • Glass Staircase WIP

    Hello,

This is my first 'proper job' with vray
    About 14 hours to render 1500x1200 original on a P4 3.0 1Gb ram
final image needs to twice that resolution.
Loads of tweaking needed me thinks!

    C&C's welcome and needed!

great work man! Only real crit from me is the background seems a little washed out. Would be nice to see some other items in the room of "equal" quality to the staircase.

I washed out the window view on purpose (added in post).
Views out of windows tend to look a bit like that when they are not the main focus and when lots of light is coming in, don't they? I've never been in a skyscaper type building so I'm not sure if this is right in this case.

I haven't put anything in as I'm sure what to put in without distracting from the stair, Any suggestions?

Well with your stairs in the center and so prominently viewed, It would take alot of detract from it, though now the environment is so austere that it almost seems the stairs look lonely It needs a supporting cast.

Lovely work. im also looking forward to seeing some more added to the scene. even if the stairs are the only thing you are working on and its not an interior design project then justget some simple stuff from turbosquid for free and throw them in.

I'm putting some 'zuliban chairs' textured by percydaman and a glass table over to the left.
not sure what to do over to the right.
will do a render tonight and hopefully post tomorrow

                  Excellent render Geoff,
if it looks that good as a work in progress can't wait to see it when its finished. Only one slight thing that I'm curious about is how the outer edge of the stair will be held up.

                  Cheers
                  TD.

                    very nice stair.
I think you have nailed it with regard to furnishing the left. I think the right hand side should look fine as it is. If the furniture is in the distance then the stair will still stand out.

tdarcy, I was wondering if anyone would ask the question "how does it stand up?"

The stair is called a G-Fin stair, or glass fin.
The glass risers are bonded to an aluminium channel top and bottom.
The channels have a hole in them where rods, which are tapped at both ends, sit. The rods thread into holes in the inner stringer and have a nut at the outer end which tightens up on the channel. The treads are then stuck on top, glass balustrade fixed on.
Bascially the glass risers are structural members, holding the stair up.

                      Does it work?

                      Yeah, course it does!
We have fabricated 4 flights, with 3 more going into production in the near future.

This stair was modelled 2 years ago but was never made.
My MD, who also designed it, liked the initial renders wanted me to improve on it for a 50 page magazine. This image will go along side 30 years worth of stairs, mostly photos.
I have 2 more to do after this with deadlines looming......

                          Candelero,
I think those are photos he's showing them to illustrate the stair is structurally possible.
...or maybe he modeled the clutter in the lower right corner to add realism

What is the square space the center handrail dissapears into?

                              Candelero, they are photos!
                              I'm not that good!
Wanted to prove that the stair will stand up.

I will post some more images. Had 1 bad night of rendering and now forgot my disk with a render.
Render time down to just under 6 hours and half required resolution.
                              AA not that good though.

Will post when I get home
