What is the square space the center handrail dissapears into

It's a photo of an unfinished site.
It's a recess for the stair's base plate and bolts so that it doesn't interfere with the flooring.

An update
Tweaked settings loads
47min irradiance map 6:30 render at 1500x1125
Having a problem with AA
Using fixed rate with 2 subdivs otherwise it's sooooo slow on the stair and lift area.
Any ideas for speed tweaks on the AA?



Blinds have been fixed....
Also I'm getting black marks on the stainless steel stringer just below the ceiling.
They don't appear on tests with out any glass (see below)
I hide the glass for the irradiance maps. Does this have anything to do with it?

looking great. I wonder if you could up the subdivs on the glossy metal a little bit though. It makes it look a little too rough.
