  • Exterior Campus Building

Here is a project I'm working on for a University campus. They are two old concrete and brick buildings (that should be torn down) conected by a new entrance that connects the two buildings into one.
I have avoided using people so far, but I'm sure they will want to see them eventually.

    C & C please

Nice work, my only problem is the trees. They look too flat. Maybe try some 3d trees instead of the 2d imagecells. Also the black cladding panels need some glossy reflections, they look a little flat.

Would you mind sharing your settings for the lighting?

Yea I know what you mean about the trees, unfortunately xfro is not in the buget yet. With this much vegitation I think 3D trees would kill me in terms of rendering time.

I thought the same thing about the black panels, but they have the same glossy reflections the grey ones do, they just don't have anything to reflect other than the background.

        looks excellent, nice work!

do you put the plants on in post or use planes with the textures on them with a mask? I think for 2D plants they are very good. Also the foreground of the grass in the first image...is the rough bits of grass next to the path modelled or done in post?

I think the shadows from the vegetation should match the rendered ones more (should be darker).

Light leaks through the vegetation more and it's farther from the wall so there would be more skylight hitting it.

I really like that black panel and the wall behind it.

All the trees and vegetation are done in post.
I do it this way because alot of times we are still in design phase as renderings are produced. Leaving vegetation for post allows me to render more renderings quicker(as the design changes) and as long as I keep the same view I can insert the new image into the previous scene.
2D Plants are OK not as nice as 3D But for exteriors seem to make sense right now since Vray still struggles with RPC's.
One thing that bothers me are the trees in the foreground. I think they should be 3D, but as of right now I don't have Xfrog.

                  The glass is pretty basic-

                  Diff-128
                  Refl-55
                  MD-20
                  Refr-255
                  MD-20
                  IOR-1.0
                  with a mapped reflection
