  • red overbright material....

    hi all!

trying to render some glasses with juice, but the juice mat is giving me trouble.
It rendered almost perfectly once, but then I mustve changed a value somewhere in the mat-editor and now it renders as a solid red material. (plus it gives me tons of overbrigth material, and invalid lightmap sample warnings....

heres a pic of my material settings and the bad render.
    using the latest beta...
lightmap for secondary bounce: 300 subdivs, 0,02 screen.
IRRmap first bounce: min/max rate -4,-3... 30 subdivs and 20 interp samples.

i did a quick search on the forums for red splotches, but didnt find anything that couldve caused mine. I use 3 Vray lights in the scene, but they are all planar. (there was some problems with spheres in the past) and none of them is set to "no decay".

    any help greatly appreciated!

anyone??? this is not a commercial job or anything, just playing around.. but I just cant get it to render correctly. very annoing...

one more thing... these red blotches/areas only happen when I use Translucency... is doesnt matter what values I use for thickness, light multiplier, color etc though... as soon as I click the checkbox "Translucent" the material goes bananas...

oh... and I tried changing secondary bounce from lightmap to qmc, but that didnt work...

mkay... I found out whats causing the red stuff... but this GOTTA be a bug right?

      check out the screengrabs below...

when I set one of the RGB sliders (doesnt matter if its R, G or B) in the "fog color" setting to 255 the material goes totally red. loweing the slider to 254 works fine, the material renders as it should...

        It's not a bug it's a feature

Seriously though, since forever it has been a no-no to have a value of 255 in the fog with translucency, seems like it would be easy to clamp to 244 but...

mkay? and here I thought I was gonna be a big hero - the one who discovered the mystery with the red blothces... but no no

but seriously... this shouldnt be too hard to fix in the next release right? hadnt read about it anywhere, and it was really starting to bug me out before I found out what was wrong....

The funny thing is I also struggled with this bug a while ago, luckily someone told me to not use 255 in the fog color..This was suposed to be a "known" bug...Funny I did not know...

well... if that many people have asked the same thing before, maybe its time to fix it - or make a sticky thread that explains the problem?

problem was that I had no idea what was causing my splotches, so when I searched the forum I searched for "red splotches" and none of the threads you posted showed up.
if I knew it was a problem with the fog color, Im sure it wouldve been very easy to find all the threads, but then again, if I knew I wouldnt have had to.

                Thanks Gael!

Tom - yeah, the problem with those "known bugs" is that unless youve been a Vray user since the very start youve no chance of knowing about them

would be interested to see a bug list that spans from that 1st beta we used to use before 1.0 was released up untill now. hehe. would be a mighty long list. (good thing is the bug fixes list is almost as long )
