  • Production of spring units - loops

One of our clients is a manufacturer of spring units and want to open a museum for their old machines.
We've been asked to create some loops to give the visitor an idea of what the machine does.
They'll be played on screens beside the machines.
It was fun and the animation of some was pretty challenging.
I used V-ray, 3ds max, railclone and fusion.

    interesting project !
the second one I think was a bit challenging specifically..I have few ideas like multiple morph target but not sure if that what you did ,could you elaborate on how you mange it ?

Simply, I love to put pixels together! Sounds easy right : ))

The second one i.e. the knot?
Or did you mean the third where the springs get packed in the bags?

The knot wasn't too difficult but took a little effort.
I used renderable splines for everything.
First I modeled the spring with knot. Then I used the spline ik control modifier to get a dummy as controller for every spline vertex.
I then build a rig out of two cylinders and rotated it along the knot.
I used the link constraint controller to link every box onto the cylinder at the right moment.
      https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IlF_EQ1FDN8
Afterwards I exported the model as vrmesh and reversed its animation.

      The packing was tricky.
I modeled all three versions of the bag.
Then I used morph and vol selects to animate them. The flat one becomes the one with spring in (animated the vol select box down with softselection).
Another one with spring in becomes the welded one (I animated the UVs in an unwarp uvw. I didn't even know that this is possible before).
Then I used railclone to stick them together. This also enabled me to let the left side of the chain slide faster in, when the spring gets sicked into its bag. The bag becomes narrower and railclone automatically takes care of the following bags.
I used another set of uvs for the weld seams and mtl id's with multi sub tex to be able to let them appear on the bag while it gets welded.
Then I added a horizontal slide and springs to the result and had the 27f of loop for the left side of the frame.

For the right side I wanted the overhanging bit of bag on top to bend down but it shouldn't look the same for every bag. So I copied the welded model 4 times, bend the tip and used a noise modifier to create some variations.
Then I used railclone again to make two more chains.
One with the overhanging bit standing straight up and one with the four variations of the bended tip.
Then I used the second as morph target for the first and a vol select with soft selection to blend them (that way the tip bends nicely down).
I rendered 108f of that because of the 4 variations and the need to make it loopable.

I finally comped both sides together in fusion.
