Little story... I am a huge Elvis fan and I have been for 40 years. I heard a story yesterday about Elvis's manager, Colonel Tom Parker. Elvis was making a movie that takes place at a carnival. On the set, Elvis gives an apple to a kid, as a prize, but the apple had a worm in it. The director stopped the scene for a new apple and the Colonel said, "no, just say that there is no charge for the meat!". The director loved it and the Colonel said, "you can use that line for $35,000". Well, the director loved it so much the Colonel got his $35,000. Apparently, the Colonel got his start as a carnival barker and he was known for charging for everything, making both him and Elvis extremely wealthy. I rarely charge extra, but it's probably not very business savvy. This project was quoted from a pdf, however, things started flowing in as the project progressed. I got a busy landscape plan, then a custom fence, and then color and material changes. Each one probably should have been extras and if I were smart, maybe I should have charged more. Typically, the changes I get would double most of what I make on each project. I really need to get into the habit of charging for anything not provided when I quote the project if it'll add time. I have asked this before and the replies were 50/50. Half said that they charge extra and half said that they don't. The landscape and fence took me a few hours, so is it really worth it? The Colonel would say, hell yes! However, will the client return if the bill is always more than what was originally requested? Heck, the other day my daughter asked for another piece of cheese on her burger and I was charged 30 cents.

Thanks, Daniel. There is always a story behind every project. I just got an email about trying a different garage door. Maybe I'll put my Colonel hat on and charge for the change.Bobby Parker
