  • NVLink Memory Doubling

    Hey guys,

I got a question regarding the Nvidia cards with NVLink. As far as I know, with NVLink the memory is shared between the gpu's other than with "normal" gpu's. This applies to gpu rendering, but I couldn't find any info, if that also applies to normal windows usage.

So my question is, if the shared memory is used all the time. For example for the max viewport. I got some pretty heavy scenes, where the 8gb of the gpu is fully used when navigating in viewport. It would be great if this "shared" memory would be available system wide.

Maybe someone with NVLink could test this with GPU-Z?

NVLINK requries software support - there are specific APIs, that the software vendors have to use in order to utilize it. I am not sure to what extend these are applicable for realtime graphics APIs like OpenGL and DirectX.

Ok, I understand. So using it for the Max viewport would probably be on autodesk site to implement.

savage309 I've got 2 2080s yesterday and expecting my NVlink to arrive in couple of days
Using the current build of Vray GPU, should I expect 16GB of VRAM? like how Tomas was using NVlink with his Quadro GP100s?
or RTX NVlink needs a Vray update?

I know that GeForce RTX NVLINK is supposed to work. I know that we have implemented first the needed APIs few years ago.
So far NVLINK works out of the box with every V-Ray GPU 3.6 and later, but I don't know if this is the case for RTX NVLINK, as we haven't tested yet. Our bridges are on their way, so soon we will be able to answer these questions (as they are shipped from abroad, it can take week or so).

Thanks Blago for the detailed explanation
I didn't preorder from Nvidia.. got 3rd party cards from a local reseller here
On the other hand many people who preordered from Nvidia directly in the US, have their NVlinks already and they are waiting on shipment of their cards lol
            Life can be unfair sometimes
            I cannot really wait lol

Long story short, as long as you can enable SLI, GeForce NVLINK works on Windows just fine https://www.chaosgroup.com/blog/prof...idia-rtx-cards
