  • RAM speed + 1950x in render times

Hi, i ve read so much stuff about ram speed in TR, and i was wondering if someone has actually tested with 3200 and 2400 ram and saw difference in render speed / simulations.
Not interested in theory/benchmarks, only if someone has actual compared the two.
    Thanks

High speed memory is essential for all Ryzen CPUs not just Threadripper. The difference between 3200 and 2400/2666 is massive
This is due to how the Ryzen architecture works, unlike Intel CPUs or old AMD architecture, where high speed memory has no effect on RAW CPU performance.
For 1950X there is 10% difference or so in CPU rendering with Vray using Gskill TridentZ RAM @3200 MHz compared to 2666
I've built over 30 workstations with the 1950X, For all my clients, I always recommend using the TridentZ 3200 MHz RAM. It works like magic with Ryzen
This also applies to the 2950x and 2990wx(locked to 2933) .. they share the same architecture and they benefit from high speed memory
There are other specs that can make 3200 MHz RAM faster/slower.. I would recommend the TridentZ from Gskill
And no need to go for 3600 or 4000 MHz RAM.. Because it is very hard to get them to work with Ryzen and you will need to use manual voltages and timings and depending on your Mobo and CPU, you might still get stuck with 3200

What exactly do you mean by "locked to 2933"? As far as I know, Ryzen CPUs happily work with RAM clocked at 3200 and higher Mhz if the RAM is good quality. My RAM (G.Skill Flare X 3200) works at 3200 Mhz at the moment and I'm using the older Threadripper 1950X so I don't really see a reason for 2950x and 2990wx not to work with higher clocked RAM.

Thanks for the info. 10% is not that much of a difference i guess Also 3200 is considered overclock right?

The memory controller on this CPU is limited to 2933 configuration, same for the 2950x, but this has nothing to do with being able to run high memory speed with Ryzen.
Just like the 1950x, I think the memory controller is limited to 2666. But of course you can achieve 3200 very easily.
3200 is achievable on the 2950x and the 2990wx, maybe a bit harder with the 2990wx currently(that is why I said it is locked to 2933, but limited is more accurate I guess ), but with bios updates it will become easier in future.
Like I said they benefit from high speed RAM, just like the 1950x

10% is massive and it is totally worth to pay the extra money for high speed RAM :P
Paying this kind of money on a 16 core CPU, I would want to reach the edge of what my hardware can do
with the 2990wx the speed boost should be even bigger.
And 3200 is an Overclock yes, with the 1950x your ram will run at 2133 out of box. You will need to go to your bios and use an XMP profile that is preconfigured for your specific RAM (With Asus Mobos it is called DOCP)
This is a bit different to CPU OC, as you are not trying to push your RAM to run at higher speeds, but rather your 3200 MHz RAM is supposed to run at this speed.
