  • New workstation specs advice

    Hello everyone!
I'm planning to build a new machine to use for my daily work which is mainly rendering using Vray/Corona so GPU rendering not that much important for me -yet- but I do work with very big projects that need powerful VGA to handle.
Here are the specs that I'm planning to buy and I would like to know your thoughts about it as I'm totally noob when it comes to hardware =D :
    MB: Asus ROG ZENITH EXTREME
    CPU: AMD Ryzen Threadripper 2990WX
    VGA: ASUS ROG-STRIX-RTX2080TI-O11G
    RAMs :2xTeam T-Force Night Hawk RGB Series 32GB (2 x 16GB) DDR4 3000
    SSD: Samsung 970 PRO 512GB - NVMe PCIe M.2 2280 SSD (MZ-V7P512BW)
HHD: WD 4TB WD4002FYYZ Gold HDD
Case: NZXT Phantom 820 CA-PH820-M1 Matte Black
    Cooling: Cooler Master Wraith Ripper
    PSU Cooler Master V1200
    Total price: 6500 $
Some of these items are available here in the market (Lebanon), but for most of them I will need to buy from Amazon so there is additional cost about ~1000$ for shipping, VAT ..etc.
Any suggestion/comments for these specs is highly appreciated.
    Thanks.

    Solid specs overall!
I would go for the MSI Meg creation.. It it is the best in market now, specially if you will OC
But if you will not do any OC or if you like Asus, the Zenith extreme is still very good
I recommend going for 64 GB of RAM, as 4 RAM sticks will work best for quad channel(even if this specific CPU has limitations)
And the Gskill tridentZ RGB 3200 MHz, works nicely with Ryzen. It is a bit pricey, but it is worth and Ryzen CPUs benefit a lot from high frequency memory.
The video card is overkill, if you can find a good deal on the 1080ti go for it, or maybe the 2080 will be more than enough
For cooling, I prefer the Be Quiet Dark Rock Pro TR4.. It is the quietest I've used
If you can find these parts in Lebanon, it is best to avoid amazon and the international warranty policy.

      Thanks for the detailed answer!
For the MB yes I'm not interested in OC and looking at the difference at the price ( +300 $ ? ) I think most probably I will go with the Zenith.
For the GPU I agree 1080ti will be more than enough for me as I only use CPU renderers for production.
I will look into the suggested items and see if I can get them here, but you know the market here is surprisingly limited when it comes to custom builds!
      Thanks again!

Zenith Extreme will do a good job. It has been the best X399 Mobo for quite a while before the Meg Creation came out.
and for this specific CPU, Zenith ships now with a free cooling upgrade kit. Make sure you get this when you buy as some idiots will sell it separately
The CPU cooler choice is not a big deal, just make sure it supports TR4
But for RAM, you probably need to stick to Gskill TridentZ..It will save you a lot of headache and it is worth the extra money. Make sure you get 4 RAM sticks(Quad channel) This is very important
And maybe look into the H500p .. it is a lovely case and really good ariflow. I use it for all my builds.
let me know if you have any questions.

Thanks again, Muhammed ! I might be able to push the budget a bit more, so I will wait till the end of this month and see. personally, I prefer to buy the up-to-date hardware to avoid the struggle of finding the right rig for 3-4 years.

            You are welcome!
The 2990wx will be king for years to come. spending this kind of money you should expect 6-8 years at least out of this hardware(except fans if you will be using this machine 10 hours everyday, usually you will need to replace fans and CPU cooler in 3-4 years depending on your use)
Ordering now will gurantee you get the hardware shipped before Christmas. Delaying it to next week, few things might be delayed to the second half of January most likely.
So to avoid delays and other problems with holidays, you might want to wait until mid January or within couple of days from now.

Thanks for the info again !
and yes my work is very demanding as most of the time I just do rendering (And now with the new IPR I think my machine will love me more =D )
last week I had to buy one 1080ti for my machine to replace the 970 that I have and I'm really happy I did it ! ..viewport is much smoother now and GPU rendering is really fast and can render really big projects now ! I'm re considering my options for the new machine if I'm going to add dual 2080 ti now =D

You should probably jump to the GPU train already
This will make huge difference for rendering animations, so basically you have your own render farm.
Commend line rendering in Vray allows you to render a single frame per GPU, so lets say you have 3 GPUs in your PC(4 render devices including C++/CPU).. ie you are rendering 4 frames simultaneously..
you can move the 1080ti to the new machine and add 2 more 2080tis.. Make sure you get blower style cards like this one
                https://www.asus.com/Graphics-Cards/...RTX2080TI-11G/
And buy an NVlink as well
