  • Phoenix FD hardware

I'm unable to write in the Phoenix forum - guess I need a licence but I'm demoing the software.

I've tried rendering on my Threadripper computers, and an old intel i76700HQ. Sims are pretty slow and not fully utilising the CPUs. It's improved by setting to 1 thread but that's not ideal.

Is the hardware compatibility likely to be improved? And I agree that a benchmark would be useful to compare hardware.

Also would there be any benefit of upgading from Vray 3.6 to Next when using Phoenix?

Hey - you can check our hardware recommendations here - https://docs.chaosgroup.com/display/...sterSimulating

Phoenix will use all of the cores that are available. Though, it's really important to note that processor speed is more important than core count. Also, NUMA (such as the Threadripper) and multiprocessor architectures do not perform well with Phoenix. Simulating on one NUMA node is often faster than waiting for multiple nodes to synchronize.

Using V-Ray Next has quite a lot of benefits and although it won't improve simulation time - it will have a great improvement on the rendering.

Are you able to share any of the specs that you guys are using and whether Phoenix is utilising the CPUs? Just as a starting point. I had already read that page.

I bought three Threadrippers as they are good bang for buck for rendering - it took me a while to get to a point where they were stable and I had to sell & re-purchase two sets of RAM in the process. In the end I went for some that was clocked a bit lower in favour of stability. So in my experience, maxing everything out isn't always the best option.

Any chance I can post on the Phoenix forum for the duration of my demo?

Looking at hardware requirements in the link - I'm pretty sure that my laptop at least meets the minimum requirements.

Here are the processor specs: https://en.wikichip.org/wiki/intel/core_i7/i7-6700hq

        The laptop is a Dell XPS15 9550
        It has 32GB RAM
        Windows10

If I open task manager - how should it look when the sim is running on an ideal system? All cores maxed at 100%?

You should be able to post in the Public section of the forum here - https://forums.chaosgroup.com/forum/...enix-fd-public

The CPU utilization really comes down to the type of simulation you're running. If the sim is relatively low res and a frame is simulated quite fast - in the Task manager it might show something like 20% CPU, because it barely starts and it has to stop to write down the cache to disk.
If the simulation takes a bit more time per frame you will notice that the CPU gets 100% utilization.

Hi Georgi, I dont see an option for a new post in the public forum.

            Thanks for the info.
