  • Advice on new Workstation build

Finalising the specification for a new workstation build.

•Be Quiet! Dark Base Pro 900 Rev 2
    •Threadripper 2990WX
    •X399 AORUS Xtreme TR4
    •Quadro RTX 4000 8GB
    •64GB DDR4 2666MHz Memory (4x16GB)
    •500GB Samsung 970 EVO
    •1TB Samsung 970 PRO
•Be Quiet! Dark Rock PRO TR4
    •1200W Gold PSU
    •Internal DVDRW
    •Integrated motherboard audio
    •Windows 10 Pro 64-bit

My main priority is for fast CPU rendering in 3ds Max, within my £5K budget, which is why I have gone for the 2990WX with its 32 cores.

With Vray Next for 3ds Max I want an upgrade path for my GPU rendering, so I have a motherboard, PSU and case which can take up to 4 GPU's.

My question is where to start with the first GPU. I have always gone with Quadro GPUs but are they necessary. The new Nvidia Quadro RTX 4000 fits within my budget, but is this the right card to add additional cards to.

    Any help appreciated.

I wonder if you lose anything with the quadro card VS the GeForce card?

I wanted to order the same cpu cooler but at bequiet web site they say that the cooler blocks the first pci-e with this motherboard.

solid build overall, couple of things to mention,

-You need 3200 MHz RAM for this CPU, faster RAM will give you more CPU performance. This is how Ryzen architecture works. I recommend the Gskill TriedentZ @3200 MHz, make sure you get 4x 16GB sticks, so you have the option to upgrade later on to 128 GB if needed
-The cooler will block the first PCIe slot like what you said, still you picked a very good board. Check out Bequiet silent loop AIO or Corsair 115i or NZXT kraken X62(needs a mounting bracket) ..for 4 cards you should have an AIO for better airflow
-You need 1600 Watts for 4 GPUs and this specific CPU, just if you want to be fully future proof
-The case you picked is very nice, comes with 3 silent wings fans, they look nice and they have no RGB. there is a built in fan hub for up to 8 fans. I have used the smaller one Silent base 801 for many builds, works nicely!
-Don't buy Quadro cards, from someone who builds GPU workstations for living.. Geforce cards are cheaper, and faster for what we do
for 200 more dollars, get an RTX 2080ti Turbo from Asus which is blower style. it has more VRAM and 3 times faster than the RTX 4000

They have ECC memory, and bunch of other features that don't matter at all for GPU rendering
Quadro drivers don't cause issues like what we deal with on Geforce side, but this shouldn't be a big deal as you can just use whatever drivers recommended by Chaos Group
Expensive quadros offer 32 GB and 48 GB of VRAM.. Quadro NVLink offers more bandwidth, but you can use them with Geforce cards
other than that Geforce cards are better,
Better cooling and overclocking, higher frequency and most importantly cheaper pricing
