  • Ryzen TR 2990wx uses 80% of the cores under load

Hi, as the subject says, I build a new system with treadripper 2 and under load it shows only 80% of the cores are being used. I'm running stock settings, is there any way to make it run at 100%?

i run 2990wx since september and it runs at 100% just fine with vray, both windows and linux, 3dmax or houdini or standalone vray. Check your temps, TR2 will start to throttle at 67 degrees celsius....
Did you checked with other applications/render? Cinebench etc?

yes its actually running at that temp right now. So 68 C is considered high for threadripper?

My 1950x throttles at 85C but maybe the 2990 is lower. When I had a failing AIO it was the same as you describe though. I would have thought it would throttle clock speed but be 100% utilization but it throttled clock AND said something like 60-80% utilization. Still seems weird that both occurred, but I bet it’s temps like Peter said.

Thanks for your advice. I've used easy tune to adjust the clock speed so its set to 3 Ghz and the temp is now at 86C! But I have another strange issue. When rendering under full load the cpu graph is sporradic, not solid like other intels I have, is that weird?

What cooler do you have running on your 2990wx?

I have three 2990wx render slaves now along with my 1950 and 1920 and none of them get over 62C and that's after a solid week straight of rendering, but they are all running custom water loops. I did have a Noctua, TR4 specific air cooler at one point and on a stock 2990wx I never got over 65C.

As far as the number of threads used during render I cant imagine what that is. Do you by chance have the environment variable "VRAY_NUM_THREADS" set to use a specific amount of threads?
            Cheers,

Syclone1, I had wrath ripper on it, but I am not sure maybe the place that built it did not do a proper build? It sounds like you need some serious cooling - I got best I could from them but it was not enough I suppose. I returned it and exchanged for i9 9980xe. Its a bit slower but much more stable *(just solely my experience with tr2).

I unfortunately have no experience with the wraithripper as Ive not personally used one, the air cooler I was running before I went to water was the Noctua NH-U14S TR4-SP3 cooler and it did a fantastic job with cooling. So much so that it would be very close in cooling performance to the NZXT X62 coolers I have. Its unfortunate that your experience was bad and again without any experience with the wraithripper or seeing your old build I couldn't say what the major problems might have been. Its good that you got it sorted in the end though. The 2990wx's have been a bit of a learning curve for me but I like building and I like the challenge lol. All three of mine are running great with custom water loops and have been invaluable in rendering my projects along with my two first gen threadrippers and an older Intel rig.
                Cheers,
