  • New Monitor

I currently use dual Dell 2007FP. They are pretty old but still work OK. I'm considering upgrading to a single 4K 32".

reading through "best 4K monitor" reviews I am considering Dell-Ultrasharp-UP3216Q. I liked the features and especially the price of the BenQ PD3200U but there are a lot of negative reviews at amazon regarding quality control/flicker problem.

Any info about experience with these or suggestions for other monitors to consider will be most appreciated.

Also I'n unsure how to determine if my Nvidia GeForce 750 ti graphics card will be compatible with these.

Thanks in advance for any advice or etc.

I don't know, I think 4K might be all hype. I have a 43" 4K and although I like it, I am not sure I get much from it being 4K. I might be wrong.

I'm thinking that my monitors a very old. While they match up pretty well there is a difference between them. for years I used an xrite color calibration monaco optix to calibrate them. Dual displays are not well supported with the old monitors and that calibration device.

Having all that screen real estate is great. I generally have all the tool pallets, frame buffer, mat editor and etc on one monitor and the image or all the max viewports on the other.

My thinking is that a new monitor will have better, more up to date color support. I'll be able to calibrate 1 monitor versus trying to get two to match. The 32" 4k gives about the same amount of screen space I have now.

I should add that I do not use computer games or watch movies on my computer so don't need a monitor for that.

I went with one large monitor to keep my focused and I don't think I would ever go back. If I needed side-by-side, I have enough screen space to do that. I can also have picture-in-picture, so I can plug my MacBook Pro in; up to four devices.

I'm not sure about your comment regarding the 4K resolution. Wouldn't a large monitor like yours need/ be best to have a high resolution like 4K ? IOW a 43" monitor with a 1600px resolution seems like not so good of setup?

I'm not sure monitors in the 32" and up size are even available at less than 4K resolution?

I use 2 x BenQ 32" 2K monitors for arch viz and love the setup. The 2560 x 1440 seems like the perfect resolution / size ratio. I'm old with tired eyes, so I sit really close to my monitors. I have the older model from about 4 yrs ago (BL3200PT), and the new model, the PD3200Q, and have had no issues out of them. I have 7 total, throughout my whole organization. I use 2 at each workstation, each on monitor arms. Love them. Once you go big....it'll be real hard to go back. I often work with one DCC app maximized in one window, keep all the tool bars/pallets on the other monitor. On one monitor I keep my web browser and windows folder splitting the screen in the background for navigation and to keep an eye on email. The 750ti will work, you have the hdmi and DP ports with 4k max resolution. Good luck deciding! (perhaps a GPU upgrade in your future....its getting to where you'll notice a nice boost from the 700 lineup)

Hi and thanks so much for your helpful reply. I'm going to pull the trigger as soon as I wrap up some work in progress. I'm leaning towards the Benq 32" now, it sounds like the past issue has been resolved. I'm going to get a new graphics card at the same me. Geforce RTX 2060 I think.

Very helpful to know you have so many of the Benq monitors in use with no troubles. Thanks!

one thing to consider is user interface of 3ds max. infinite number of little windows most of which can’t be docked is much easier to manage on two smaller screens than one big display.
new blender is very good example of modern ui working in nicely contained window. max is pretty much opposing spectrum in that regard.

i would also recommend Eizo, self calibrating, rather go 2k and get a real good monitor (and a second for the palettes and tools). i use such a setup(eizo+wacoom 24)

Thank you three for your helpful replies. Piotrus and Stefan - I currently have dual monitors and work the same as you describe. I arrange all the tool pallets, material editor, frame buffer etc on one monitor and have the viewports on the other. Same in pshop, all the tool pallets and etc on one monitor and the images open on the other. This way of working is critical to me.

I was thinking that with one large 4K monitor I could still do this by having all the tools pallets and etc moved to one side/ half and then viewports sized to fill the other half. Now, after your comments I’m not sure that would work? IOW I was imagining I could have one 32” 4K monitor and arrange max on it the same way I currently have it set up using 2- 20” monitors. Are you saying that won’t be possible?

heh. try setting it up on the display you have, than printscreen that and put into 4k. you won’t know until you try. you will loose a lot of pixels horizontally and most menus ale rather taller than wider. depends on your needs. for example I worked briefly on 27 + 22 inch. 22 was rotated to portrait just to fit full vrayMtl section of slate mat editor top to bottom.

I'm very happy with my 34" Ultrawide WQHD monitor (3440 * 1440) perfect size and it's like having two monitors in one. (less than $400)
for about 800 you could get a dell ultra-wide 38"

                              Hi Morne,

I got the BenQ PD3200U. It is a very good monitor and I have had no trouble or complaints with it. I like it and like having the one monitor versus the dual setup I used to use.

The only caveat I might mention is it does not display Adobe RGB. I used to work in Adobe RGB and have switched to sRGB. It wasn't worth the hassle of working in Adobe RGB to me. Lots of info online about that. Lots more $ for a monitor that can display the full Adobe RGB color gamut.

Hope this is helpful to you.
