  • AMD Radeon VII / VRAY GPU Issue

    Hi there,
i recently installed an AMD Radeon VII card in my system. It works fine so far but in the Vray CPU Next settings for the GPU device, the message "Unable to match any devices from enviroment variable VRAY_OPENCL_PLATFORMS_x64=" appears.
Does anyone have experience with AMD GPU's/OpenCL and knows how to solve the Problem or what is missing?

    Thank's for the support.

Sorry to say, with V-Ray Next we have dropped support for AMD (OpenCL) GPUs. With the current state of OpenCL support in AMD drivers, it's not possible to maintain stable rendering for our users.

Are there any plans on further development\support for the AMD cards?

From what I have heard, Chaos Group is working on it but they never promised any date or time windows. Someone said the develepment of OpenCL support highly relies on the Apple side.

Btw I tried to render with AMD vega x64 on MacPro by enabling OpenCL in the environment variable in Maya but it refused to render anyway. Pity because we have 3 of those GPUs at work and they are pretty much useless.

Yeah, it's been pretty sad over the years trying to get AMD hardware to work on the various iterations of RT and later Next GPU. It always seemed that CG was doing everything they could but dev support from AMD was almost zero; it always seemed AMD found it easier to declare support for open standards and professional users in keynotes and tradeshows rather than actually work with developers, at least in this segment. I'm impressed CG kept it up as long as they did. Hopefully AMD's approach will improve with their apparent RTX alternative.
