Will those powerhouse CPUs be an incredible increase (or waste of money) for running vray 3.7 or mainly best for vray next? with 3ds max

Threadripper 3960X and 3970X work with V-ray 3.7?

Well, definitely not waste of money, both of these CPUs are great we recently got 3970x in our studio and man...what a beast. Regarding their performance on different V-Ray versions, I don't think it is much related to V-Ray being optimized for the hardware (though, the newest Maya update included bucket optimization for 128Numa core CPUs and I have no idea how better they are suppose to perform now). It is V-Ray itself that got significantly faster with Adaptive Domelight being up to 50-65% faster in some cases plus I Nvidia denoiser added in Next can do miracles out of very noisy image, great for previews and perhaps in your case - could greatly cut your render times of your animations. Bear in mind that 3.7 licence won't work with NEXT in DR.Last edited by Karol.Osinski; 28-01-2020, 02:16 PM.My Artstation

I have 3960x and feels, like smth with AMD-vray isn't right. I had a bunch of issues, I didn't face with my xeon.
Btw - cooling wise - noctua with double fans - just unbeatable 79C at max (and quite). So, you don't need any AIO etc...I just can't seem to trust myself
So what chance does that leave, for anyone else?

Thank you very much., Paul and Karol.
I am going to have to stick with V-ray 3.7 for a few years until I can upgrade to NEXT. I realized my PC isn't up to the job so first I need a more powerful system so I'm getting that 1st.
I've always had Intel. Need something faster than what I have but don't want a bunch of problems to have to troubleshoot. I am hoping to be able to just open the 3ds max projects I've been working on in the new system and click render , haha

Well, when I set my Threadripper 3970x to use only 24-cores to simulate Threadripper 3960x, his scene renders many times faster than both his Intel i7 6950x and his Threadripper 3960x. In fact, my simulated Threadripper 3960x is 6 times faster than his i7 6950x and 17.5 times faster than his 3960x. So as evident by my test, AMD Threadripper 3000 CPUs are insanely fast and the problem is somewhere else. I think there's a problem with his system setup. Please check my reply and investigation in his thread here.
I'm sorry to see his issue but glad that the threadrippers can indeed offer some serious performance, which is exactly what I'm trying to improve from my old i7s.
