Threadripper 3990X is out

So the beast is finally out and results are starting to pop up on the V-Ray benchmark site:

I hope to get a 3990X setup for testing soon. In the meantime, I'd like to point out that some website (f.e. TechGage) claim to be doing "real-world" tests for V-Ray, but when we asked for the scenes and looked, we found out that they use outdated settings and a set up that really doesn't do the new CPU proper justice. The V-Ray benchmark on the other hand, tends to reflect CPU performance more accurately as it is specifically designed for that.

hi Vlado,does the benchmark put a lot of stress on memory too? Does 3990x have 8 channel for memory unlike 2990wx which struggles with its shared 4 channels?

the 3990x has only 4 channels, but through some witchcraft which i dont understand, it seems to be fine in basically every test ive seen so far..although it doesnt double the 32 core scores, maybe thats why.. id love to hear an expert opinion


ive got a 32 core on the way.. was tempted to send it back as soon as i got it.. but 4k for a cpu is just a bit too much :P

plus the 32 has better low threaded performance and given max's 1980's grade multithreading , its quite important.

Looks like it suffers a bit under win pro and needs enterprise as per review on Anandtech.
planning to buy two so i am really curious how thise evolves.

I think 3990X doesnt need 8 channels, because its reworked and every die in CPU has its own access to memory, but in 2990WX only 2 dies of 4 has access.

Vlado said to me that VRay recognise all CPU groups. But probably there are still some limit on Win 10 side. Dont know if Chaos Group can do anything about it, probably not much.

Pff.. Having seen the enormous vray scores achieved with PBO enabled on these chips..

Im sorely tempted to return my 3970x.

However a) its not actually available anywhere yet and b) with PBO enabled it can draw 600w+

I have the 8 phase asrock creator motherboard. Its power stage does MAX 1080w. I have no idea if thats too close for comfort or not.

Linus just did a review and he said it was fast, but there are limitations. Also, he said it is about as fast as the Titan XP, which is less money (albeit now by much).

You cant compare this with GPU. Rendering on GPU is too different. And some scenes on GPU will be faster, on others much much slower and GPU still have too much limitation. This CPU will be the game changer, as Vlado said. I will just wait until Vlado publish his own tests.

I think he was speaking strictly the VRay bench test.
