  • cooler for Threadripper 3970x?

Thanks to some helpful input here I think that my cooler
FAN: Asetek 570LC 120mm (Fatboy) Liquid CPU Cooling System w/ Copper Cold Plate (2x CyberPowerPC 120mm Dual Light Loop ARGB 1200RPM Fans w/ Hub + Remote (Push-Pull) [+16])
is inadequate, though the nice Cyberpower guy says it can render 24/7 no problem. My PC is on backorder (waiting for case) so I need to figure out what cooler will work and this is way over my head.
I am getting this for 3ds Max and v-ray for faster renders so it will be running for days/weeks.Click image for larger version

    My case:
CAS: Phanteks Enthoo Luxe Full Tower Gaming Case W/ Full-size Tempered Glass Panel Window + RGB 10 Color LED Light Strip (Anthracite Gray)
    http://www.phanteks.com/Enthoo-Luxe-TemperedGlass.html

    Motherboard:
    ASUS Prime TRX40-Pro ATX w/ RGB, Intel LAN, 3 PCIe x16, 1 PCIe x1, 8 SATA3, 3 M.2 SATA/PCIe

According the the Cyberpower build site the Asetek 570LC is the only cooler they offer that will fit but according to Phanteks 240, 360 and even 420mm will fit.
These are the coolers CP offers so if one of these will work then it should be an easy order change. If not, I need to determine a cooler that will fit and see if they will build the system with it.

AIO 360+ to compete with air.

Use plain noctua + 2 fans. Will be better.
I just can't seem to trust myself
So what chance does that leave, for anyone else?

I am using a Noctua NH-U14S TR4-SP3 on the 3970x threadripper and I do not go above 65° C when rendering.
I have a second fan for a push-pull configuration and a third fan to get the hot air out of my case. This is with 12 cm noctua fans because my ram is too high.
So you need lower profile ram or at least 185mm space for the 14cm fans in your case.
      It is still silent enough.

Thank you very much. I read that AMD requires liquid cooling for Threadripper warranty. ?? I don't know if that is true.

        My RAM is G.SKILL Trident Z Royal Series 128GB (4 x 32GB) 288-Pin DDR4 SDRAM DDR4 3200 (PC4 25600) Desktop Memory Model F4-3200C16Q-128GTRG.
It was the only 4X32GB option in stock at the time. If I'd known my system would go to backorder and cheaper RAM would soon become available I would have waited.

Hi you can check my post with the temp i get with the 3970x and auros 360 AIO. around 77 to 80at stock. Stable but higher temps than what others get with the noctua..
BTW a question for the noctua owners i think about getting the LIAN LI o11 dynamic case. can it fit inside the case or the heatsink is too big for the door to close?

You have to use the o11 xl with the noctua. I am using trident z neo ram 8x 3600, which is pretty but high.
i had to switch to the 12cm noctua fans. The cooler is a very close fit. One of its heatpipes seems to touch the glass panel but it still closes without problem.
            https://geizhals.de/?cat=WL-919362 here is my setup.

Thank you. Dumb question. How to you end up with 120mm (12cm) fans? Do you buy the unit with 14cm fans and then change them out to the 12cm fans or is there a version of the Noctua that comes with 12 cm fans already?

Well, the case comes without fans, so I bought a few 12 cm noctua fans (the Noctua NF-A12x25 PWM are really good and silent). When I had installed the cpu cooler and put everything into the case the 14 cm fan did not fit (I had one 14cm that comes with the cpu cooler and one extra for a push-pull setup). The 12 cm fan did fit. So I just used two of those on the cooler and my temps are really ok with 65°C when rendering. You can see in the picture, that the 12 cm fans do not cover the whole cooler but it is not a problem.
I have two more fans in the rear and the rear top which blow the hot air from the cpu cooler out of the case. They are very important to get 65° otherwise there was too much hot air in the case. The rear fan should be enough, though.

My fan setup for the LianLi o11 xl include the two 14 cm fans that I did not really need; maybe they help a little bit. I have one 14 cm fan in the bottom front pulling cool air into the case (not present in the picture), the same goes for the two 12 cm fans in the front backside. And one 14 cm and 12 cm fan in the rear are pushing hot air out of the case + plus two 12 cm fans on the cpu coller.

Thought I would share a little nugget related to this thread. Last week I ordered a new 3990x rig from Puget Systems. I have 2 other dual-xeon workstations from these guys, their products are extremely well built, great service, etc. So, they get the parts together & I'm waiting a few days for the build to commence. Now, when I ordered the system, they had 2 cooling options: air with a Noctua fan or a liquid cooled Corsair option. After hearing about how hot these TR procs run, I figured I'd go for the liquid cooled option. Then, I start seeing all of these other threads about how air cooled is actually better & quieter & also has less points of failure. Also, a number of YT vids on the virtues of air cooling beating liquid cooled, etc.

Then, while I'm still waiting for my build to commence, on a lark I go back to the Puget site to see what types of cooling they offer & they ditched the liquid cooling all together. Fast forward to now, I just spoke to a tech @ Puget & they swapped my liquid cooling out for the Noctua NH-U14S. Seems as if Puget is getting out of the liquid cooled business altogether according to the tech I spoke with.

So after researching this for a while is seems there just aren't hardly any cooling choices for 3rd gen Threadripper:

CORSAIR Hydro Series H150i PRO - Needs an extra bracket to fit which isn't available anywhere

Cooler Master ML360 TR4 - has cheap plastic that breaks

enermax liqtech 360 - has the best performace (at first) until it clogs up and fails and fans get noisy a few months in. Unknown whether later versions have fixed problem or not.

Noctua NH-U14S TR4-SP3 -.may block some RAM, needs 120mm fans to clear RAM, may not be as good as liquid for long term renders

Dark Rock Pro TR4 - not as good as Noctua

And then there are several which do not have plates big enough to cover the entire chip.
So it seems the Noctua is basically the only choice.

Well, about the long terms - simming a lot of time in H and noctua is rock solid. 24 hours at 100%

And about RAM - I feel like buying simple samsung radiatorless RAM is a best option as I can't see RAM is THAT hot. And speed VS capacity - I chose capacity + AMD official 256gb kit RAM speed is 2666.

Thank you Paul. I'm pretty much convinced to go Noctua. But I can't order my system with it so I guess I'll have to swap out the AIO when it arrives with a Noctua and put a couple 120mm fans on it. I'm really not looking forward to doing that as I am scared of messing with an expensive computer. Guess I'll research removal and installation, thermal paste procedure etc... And hope my RAM fits

So you got the 256GB kit to work at 3000Mhz? They say it only supports 2666 right? That is good news.
The 128GB kit will work at 3200MHz right?

Well, it can work even higher, it is just a question of settings and the benefits it brings.
