  • The smallest (biggest?). 64 core workstation

So some of you may remember my last build, many years ago. Two 3930k machines in a single smallish case. It served me well all these years, although overclocking claimed first one cpu, then, a month ago, in the middle of a job, the other .

Well. They lasted a good many years, and simply made my new build (long planned) urgent. My obsession with fitting things in smaller spaces than they should be has not diminished.

So. Take the smallest atx case available, the wonderful Cerberus X, and add the most powerful single cpu on the market, the mighty 3990x, and squeeze one inside the other. What do you get? Click image for larger version Name:	IMG_20200223_120135.jpg Views:	1 Size:	997.9 KB ID:	1062405

Super low temps, decent OC, and capacity for 4 full size gpus... What? Impossible?

    I did cheat somewhat.

A project i did a few years back was a massive external watercooler, designed to silently cool multiple machines - the start of a renderfarm project which never materialised.

Its theoretically capable of dealing with 4kw.

(at the moment im recycling the 2x gen1 titan x from my old machine, wallet needs to recover)

Its (almost) silent, and even gpu rendering on both cards ad cpu, with cpu running at 3.9 ghz (430 watts!) my cpu temps never go above 65 degrees. Gpus stay around 30.

"whats the point of a small case if its attached to that big ugly lump?" i hear you ask.

Well, the advantage is, its connected with quick disconnects:

So when i go away, i can disconnect it and easily (not so easily, it weighs 20kg) take it round to a safe place. Its worth more than my car after all.

The other point, perhaps more important: if i already have the cooler, why use a big case?

At the moment its missing a carrying handle on top. It was delayed and is being shipped seperately.

She has been running for a week, and so far.. Wow! Rock solid stable.. And the step up from a 3930k is.. Notable.

    Specs are:

    Machine:

    Asrock creator motherboard
    Threadripper 3990x
    128 gb Gskill trident z 3200 cl15 ram
    Corsair ax1600i psu
    Heatkiller iv block
    2x noctua 140mm fans
2x titan x watercooled gpus (temporary, hurry up ampere!)

3x pcie4 nvme 2tb drives (1 for system, two in raid 0 for work drive.)

The raid 0 is duplicated using allway sync to a pair of 6tb hdds in raid 1 mirror, and then synced to backblaze cloud storage

    Cooler:

    2x mora3 radiators
    2x D5 pumps
6x silverstone 180mm fans. (or 160? Cant remeber, dont have a ruler here)

Massive psu installed. With all the cables neatly tiied down, and no cooler to fit in, airflow is pretty great actually..

this is a bit of a stupid question, but can i ask why you went down the high end cpu route, then also with the 4 gpu, isnt this kind of counter intuitive? Just trying to get an insight into your thinking.

i went the high end cpu route since ive been very frustrated by gpu rendering so far, and ithe 3990 is working beautifully so far.. what a monster it is.

however i dont wish to lose the ability to load up on gpus in the future, if the next generation/version of vray means that gpu rendering becomes the preferred choice. so i simply chose a motherboard with space for 4x gpus. i dont want to have to build a new machine in that case.

at the moment im using 2 gpus, but they are my old ones.

yeah, ive just been trying out the gpu rendering with the latest version for maya, quite a frustrating process and quite disappointing tbh. But I guess at least it pushes me in the cpu direction. Thanks for your reply.

Don't limit yourself to just Vray, GPU rendering is a lot of fun. Octane or Fstorm are 20/month
and something that will help you picking the parts, consider the value(it is really what you get out of your money)
The 3990wx doesn't have the best value(even though it is the most powerful consumer CPU)
3970x is much better value, but the 3950X is best value in the market.
The 2080ti doesn't have the best value on the GPU side, 2080 supers do have much better value and they support NVlink
