  • Yes another many cores vs fewer cores question :-)

I'm going to build a new PC for 3ds max and V-ray soon. But I don't quite know what is best. Many cores are good for CPU rendering, and few cores with a high clock speed are good for 3ds max performance.
An AMD Threadripper 3970x or 3990x is great for render, but also costs a lot. So the question is a bit whether a cheaper processor with few cores and high clock speed would be better, along with maybe two graphics cards for GPU rendering.

    Here are two options.

    AMD Threadripper 3990x
    Geforce GTX 1080ti

    Intel i9 9900k
    2x Geforce 2080ti

I suppose the intel version will have more power for the 3ds max itself, due to the few cores and high clock speed, but will the two big graphics cards be as quick at rendering with gpu as Threadripper will with cpu render?

    Thanks

You don't need an Intel CPU to have good single threaded performance for 3Ds Max, some of the AMD CPUs can achieve the same and even better than some of the i9s
Specially third generation Ryzen CPUs, they can use XFR to go to 4.4 or 4.5 Ghz which is more than enough for a good 3Ds Max performance

To make this easier on yourself, look at the parts that represents best value/money
The 3950x for example is a very good deal! 16 cores and could boost to 4.6-4.7 GHz
2080 Supers are great value as well. Check out Vray benchmark page to see how the different parts compare

    Best,

Thanks for reply. I think that the i9 9900k have a clock speed of up to 5,0 ghz, and therefore thought, that it would perform better than a Ryzen og Threatripper...

You wont, or will barely notice it day to day.
For the price of a single 3990x you could build 2 3950x machines and have one rendering in the background while you work as a separate render node. That you will be able to notice!

Yes thats right, but I don't need a render "farm". Just a single work machine
