  • Xeon platinum 8270QS or Threaripper 3990x

I`m going to purchase another computer for my render farm, but I`m not sure wich processor should I pick.
Xeon platinum 8270QS or Threaripper 3990x
    Anyone has experience on this?

    thanks!

The Xeon CPU sells for 6.5k Euros here, the 3990wx is about half the price and much faster.. You will need 2 Xeons to come close to the performance of the Threadripper
And the Xeon would need a more expensive server board(if you plan on running 2)

I would only consider the Intel CPU if you get a nice deal on it.. otherwise the 3990wx is the way to go

    Best,

I`m considering because I found a pretty good deal and the system have 2 processors.
Would the threadripper be faster even against a dual xeon processor?

The threadripper still has the edge, but you will be close with 2 of these CPUs.. if you find a good deal, go for it.
If pricing is out of the equation the Xeons are a good choice, they support up to 1 TB of RAM
In the case of the 3990wx, you gonna run into issues if you have all RAM slots occupied. You might need custom timings to run the RAM at the rated speeds, it is much easier on Intel's side

            Hello,

I am the proud owner of a 3990x with 256gb ram (CORSAIR DDR4 256GB (8 * 32) CMK256GX4M8E3200C16) and aorus Xtreme TRX40 which works perfectly well! Ventilated with a NOCTUA NH-U14S TR4-SP3 noctua (in push and pull) the rendering temperature does not exceed 66 ° C. (with a high ambient temperature ...)
It is a monster of power and stability! AMD has done a huge job since the 2000 series to resolve ram problems ...
            Hope it helps..

I have a 3970x with same cooler as you, I'm not getting anywhere near as low as 66, what software do you use to measure?

I use AMD RYZEN MASTER and HWMONITOR. From what I have read on forums this difference is normal, paradoxically the 3970 is much more difficult to cool than the 3990X (forum dedicated to threadrippers on the CORONA harware forum in particular).
This seems to be due to the fact that the transistors of the 3990X processor are more widely distributed while those of the 3970 are more concentrated.
As a result the fans are much more efficient on the 3990X because the processor heat is less concentrated in a small area.
In all all the benchmarks confirm this paradox, the 3990X with 2X times more cores but heats much less.

Interesting, I wasn't aware of that.
