  • Ryzen 9 processor stutter

    Hello,

Recently moved up to a new system with an AMD Ryzen 3950X and I have been experiencing what I can only describe as a stutter with the mouse. It skips across the screen, when not under full load as well, just using the desktop. It can be worse when using apps like 3ds Max and Photoshop. I did do a quick Google and found others experiencing the same issue. I wondered if anyone on here has also experienced this at all? My next plan is to start looking at updating drivers, BIOS etc. But wondered if it could be perhaps GPU related. Maybe AMD not liking that an NIVIDIA GPU is being used .

    Full sec:

    AMD Ryzen 9 3950X
    ASUSĀ® TUF X570-PLUS
    128GB Corsair VENGEANCE DDR4 3000MHz (4 x 32GB)
    NVIDIA 980ti x 2
    1TB Samsung 860 PRO
    1TB Samsung 860 EVO
500GB SAMSUNG 970 EVO PLUS M.2, PCIe NVMe
    6TB SEAGATE BARRACUDA SATA-III 3.5" HDD,
    CORSAIR 1200W HX SERIES

    Thanks,

what a bummer! we have about 10 of the 3950x deployed as workstations and haven't encountered this.

    Gigabyte x570 Aorus Master
    64GB (2x 32) Ram
    RTX 2060 Super
    Samsung 970 Pro
    3TB Seagate barracuda HDD
    1000w EVGA G2 (or similar)

i wonder if you're overloading the PCH for x570, with the 2nd GPU and then all the storage. just a thought that maybe removing the 2nd 980ti would be a good test to make sure the PCH isn't having issues.

Also your idea of updating the bios and drivers is prob good idea

Thanks for the info, sadly removing the 2nd GPU did nothing. Although I plan to upgrade to Ampere shortly so it may or may not fix it, if it is indeed GPU related. It is such a strange issue that it could be caused by either a hardware or software fault. I guess I'll start with small simple fixes and hope one works. I read that it could be monitor refresh rates, so that's next on my list to try.

Have you noticed any other performance issues other than the mouse stutter? Have you been monitoring your CPU with Task Manager or something like HWinfo? Don't know if this is related to your issue, but when I upgraded to the 3950X I was running into issues where sometimes when I'd turn on the computer some cores would be stuck at a very low clock (like 560mhz), resulting in very sluggish performance to do even the simplest tasks.

I don't know exactly what fixed it, but I updated everything I could think of (BIOS, chipset drivers, etc... even Windows) and one of them did the trick.

One thing I learned from this whole process is to download the chipset drivers directly from AMD's website as opposed to ASUS's. I don't know if this applies to all of their motherboards, but as far as my motherboard goes (STRIX X-470f), the download links for the chipset on ASUS's website are hot garbage.

Hi there, might seem unrelated, are you using a wireless mouse? If you are, try a cabled mouse to discount interference with the wireless dongle - especially if you have another USB device plugged in next to it. Ben

that was my first thought but sadly not the reason for the stutter.

I haven't had a chance to monitor things properly as I am in the middle of a project. But my plan is once things are quiet to look into this properly. But I have noticed other issues such as when deleting files and folders. They don't disappear from view until I press F5 to refresh. Not all the time but on occasion. When I get round to it, I will update all drivers, bios etc. and see if any of these strange glitches remain. Until then I am just putting up with them.

Sounds like a good idea! When you get the time to look more closely, examine the Deferred Procedure Calls (DPC). It is possible that they are partially responsible for the symptoms. Here's a link to a good program and explanation:
                http://www.thesycon.de/eng/latency_check.shtml
I have also seen similar things if the windows process priority is set to background processes.
Hope you get to the bottom of it
