  • RAM upgrade - overkill or not

    Hey everyone,
I have a 4-year-old BOXX CPU render server with double Xeon E5 CPUs that I use for distributed rendering only. I've been working on few large-scale exterior projects with lots of proxies and forest objects nowadays. Distributed render has been failing for some time - especialy when rendering exterior scenes. RAM usage hits a peak and render fails. Anyways. I decided to purchase additional RAMs for the server.
The server now has 32 Gigs of rams. I'll either upgrade to 64 of 128. Would 128 gigs be an overkill for a 4 years old Xeon E2640 v4 CPUs? What I know is 32Gigs are not enough anymore especially when rendering large scenes with lots of forest objects and proxies All used to work well enough before Vay next. good old days LOL

I have a first gen 1950x threadripper, 3 yrs old, and I just doubled my ram from 64gb to 128gb (automotive client doesnt quite grasp adaptive tessellation) and it make a world of difference. Its like a new pc again. Ill never buy a new machine with less than 128gb again if my work comes close to using over 50gb regularly.

We have a mix of 64 and 128GB xeon's (older generation like yours). The 64's do quite well tbh, vray5 is more solid in that regard. We had more ram issues with next. We looked into upgrading the 64's but it was more cost effective to buy newer pc's with 128gb than the ram upgrade path. But if that isn't an option I would recommend 128GB.
