  • 2x 3090 with nvlink - setup questions

    Hello,

I am a little confused right now and maybe someone here has some answers.

I have the ASUS ROG Zenith II Extreme mainboard. Am I right that I would need a 3 slot nvlink?
Should the try to get two founders editions or would it be ok to use two 3090 with axial fans, like the GIGABYTE GeForce RTX 3090 Gaming? Would airflow and cooling be good enough?

    Thanks for your help,
    Jan

People don't have the luxury of choosing the cards they get nowadays. You will most likely buy what you find
You will need 2 identical cards for NVlink to physically fit between your 2 GPUs. I would avoid Gigabyte Gaming OC, it has thermal issues
Find MSI Gaming X Trio or the FE cards, they will work fine. EVGA FTW3, XC3 are great as well

It will not make a big difference, in all cases you need AC + good airflow in your system for best results
Pretty much all 3090s get very hot in dual-GPU setups

      Thank you.
The availability is getting better in Germany. I actually have a lot of choices and the price is nearing 2k €.
The FE cards are available on ebay only, sold by scalpers.

Muhammed, maybe you can help me here. Must the manufacturer be identical or also the model? An ASUS TUF GeForce RTX 3090 O24G-GAMING and an ASUS TURBO GeForce RTX3090 24G? They have different clock rates but the same chip.

          Hello arcmos

The TUF Gaming 3090 is a little taller than the Turbo 3090 card, they will not be aligned and you will not be able to use an NVlink bridge (unless you displace the cards somehow and mount them outside of the board)
Different clock speeds/memory is all fine as long as both cards have the same height.

It is not easy for users to verify this(need to make sure the cards have the same PCB design), so I tell people to have identical cards and make it easier on themselves

But if you have more questions let me know

          Best,
          Muhammed
