  • Will Vray run on the new M1 Pro/Max chips?

    Hi all

I'm at the tipping point of investing in new hardware/software and keeping my focus on Vray rendering. My preference lays in the apple/mac ecosystem and with these new pro models i want to make the jump to renew.
But here and there i've read that Vray does not run on M1 chips or they do run but you cannot use the asset manager and render the scenes, which makes it pretty useless on these M1 macs.

It's really a bummer if it will not be optimised. And making a wrong investment is a no go.

Does anyone have more information about this topic or does the Chaos team have some more news to make working on M1 chips feasible?

    Thank you.

    A.

We are working on native M1 versions of V-Ray for Cinema 4D and V-Ray for SketchUp and these should be included in their respective updates in the next couple of weeks.

    Best regards,

Hello! Very excited for this. To be clear, when you say native M1 versions, do you mean M1 Pro and Max as well? Can we expect to be able to render with the GPU or just CPU?

The code is for the instruction set so it will work on any AS machine, no GPU engine.

          Hey jrozansky

You will be able to use V-Ray and V-Ray GPU, with the native M1 versions of V-Ray for C4D and V-Ray for SketchUp
V-Ray GPU will run in CPU mode

Although Maya itself is not yet AS native, are there any plans for native AS Vray for Maya?

              Hi Muhammed and Vlado

I’m looking to buy a new MacBook Pro and am happy to go for max gpu cores but will this accelerate the render if it is just running in cpu mode as you mentioned above or would it not take advantage of all the cores. I use SketchUp as my modeller which is only single threaded so I don’t think that benefits from extra gpu cores at the moment. Many thanks in advance

              best regards

              Dan

More GPU cores won’t do anything for Vray, unless you need them for other tasks (video editing or computing with support for GPU/Metal) save your money.
When Muhammed said that you can run Vray GPU he mean that your CPU will emulate a CUDA device, but usually there’s no point in doing that, is not any faster than running in standard CPU mode.

V-Ray and V-Ray GPU will only use the CPU cores for now, on the these new machines
That being said I went for the M1 Max for my personal MacBook, it has double the memory bandwidth and 64 GB of system memory, which makes a difference as well

V-Ray GPU running on CPU devices, is much better terminology. There is no emulation really

                      Hi Muhammed and Sirio

Thanks for your replies, they are very helpful. I will stick with the higher end model for the bandwidth and RAM and perhaps in the future Vray will tap into the GPUs'

all my best and look forward to trying out the native version (I have an M1 Mac Mini at the moment to test my software on before leaping onto a new main machine)

Hey guys. I just installed in my new MacBook Pro 16 MAX 64 maxed out and I am not impressed at all.
Not so much faster than my renders on my 2 year old i7 Lenovo.

Were you able to see if all the cores were running and what speed they were running at? Were you able to run the vray benchmark software to get a benchmark? I’ve been wanting to see a benchmark of any of the new m1 chips!
it seems like this could change once the aforementioned vray/sketchup/m1 compatibility updates arrive. Just wondering by how much, and how it’s working now.

                          thanks!

Let me share my screenshots with benchmarks. I just downloaded the benchmark app and ran the test. Please let me know if I missed something.

                              roberto_oliveira Hello!

The Benchmark tool doesn't have the native M1 support, you will need a build of V-Ray for SketchUp/C4D for this

                              Best,
